  • Director of Operations

The Institute of Human Rights and Business (IHRB) is the leading international think tank on business and human rights. IHRB’s mission is to shape policy, advance practice, and strengthen accountability in order to make respect for human rights part of everyday business.

    Job Overview

This is a senior leadership role that leads through empowerment rather than control – and, above all, it is a role about people. Its first job is to build the conditions, the systems, structures and culture, in which a small, capable, globally dispersed team can be happy, healthy and high-performing, and do their best work. That matters because when our team thrives, IHRB is far better able to advance the rights and dignity of the people and communities we exist to serve. Working alongside the Chief Executive, and the Heads of Programmes, the postholder forms IHRB’s leadership team: while the Director of Programmes leads our work and its impact, the Director of Operations builds the foundations that make it possible. A particular focus is financial sustainability and full cost recovery – recovering the true cost of our work and steadily closing the gap between grant income and the real cost of delivery – because secure finances are what keep both the mission and the team on solid ground.

It’s an operational partnership at heart. The CEO carries IHRB’s external, fundraising and board-facing leadership; the Heads of Programmes lead our work and its impact; and the Director of Operations is the partner who turns shared ambition into how the organisation actually runs – leading and empowering the central operations team so that each of them can lead their own domain well.

    Expected Impact and Outcomes:

    • A happy, healthy and high-performing team: a globally dispersed group of people who feel supported, included and able to grow, in an environment that brings out their best – because that is ultimately what enables IHRB to advance the rights of the people and communities we serve. This is underpinned by an embedded performance and progression framework, with regular review cycles, clear progression pathways, and measurable improvement in engagement and progression against our 2025 baseline.
    • A fully recoverable core budget by end 2027, with the Full Cost Recovery model embedded across all grant applications and reporting, and clear visibility of financial management for the CEO and trustees.
    • The new organisational structure embedded and operating effectively, with clear accountability, reduced silos, and central functions that genuinely enable the programmes.
    • A measurable step-change in IHRB’s use of AI and intelligent tooling – with the team confidently using AI as a daily collaborator, structured guidance in place for ethical and effective use, and demonstrable productivity gains across operations.
    • Effective management of compliance and risk, ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions in which IHRB operates.
    • Optimised internal processes and increased adoption of strategic systems, including project management, the CRM, and financial management tools.

    Key Responsibilities

The approximate balance of the role is shown below; it may change with the organisation’s needs. The postholder leads a capable team rather than delivering everything personally.

Operational effectiveness and strategic enablement (40%)

    • Drive organisational effectiveness across all central functions – identifying improvements, scoping high-impact projects, preempting problems, and removing blockers to ensure systems support rather than constrain the team
    • Lead IHRB’s approach to AI deployment and operational optimisation, identifying where intelligent tools can create leverage, embedding them into team workflows, building team capability through training and structured support, and developing IHRB’s position on the responsible use of AI internally given our human rights mission, working closely with Head of Communications and the CEO
    • Lead the operational management of IHRB’s internal communications function in partnership with the Head of Communications

    • Flexible and adaptable: open to adjusting aspects of the work and timelines as needed to cater to the realities of a small and nimble organisation

    What we can offer you

The chance to shape the operational foundations of an influential, international organisation working at the leading edge of business and human rights – with the autonomy of a senior leadership role, a capable team to lead, and the variety of a small, ambitious organisation. We work flexibly and across borders, and value trust and autonomy over hierarchy.

    • Compensation: 85,000 GBP FTE

Good to know: Your contract type will depend on where you are based, which we can discuss with you in more detail. We are a UK-based organisation, therefore if you are based outside of the UK you will be engaged through a consultancy agreement. You would need to be registered as self-employed in your country of residence and would be responsible for managing your own taxes, insurance, and any other legal or financial obligations.

    Timeline & Process

Deadline for applications: 11.59pm 12th July, 2026 (GMT)

First interviews will most likely be held the week of 20th July (depending on internal availability) via video call and will be based on situational questions and discussions about your experience

Second interviews for the final candidate(s) being considered will be held mostly likely w/c 27th July, 2026 (depending on internal availability) via video call and will involve a short task as well as questions about your approach, history and what you’d bring to the role

Expected start date: As soon as possible

    A few things to note…

A note on how we hire: we believe in merit-based hiring, and our process is deliberately clear, structured and inclusive, with applications reviewed anonymously so that every candidate is assessed fairly, on the same basis, against what the role genuinely needs. Please don’t send LinkedIn messages or other direct approaches to IHRB team members about this role – they can’t be taken into account and won’t strengthen an application, and they cut across the fairness our anonymous review is there to protect.

Inclusion and adjustments: we’re an equal-opportunity employer and we actively welcome applications from people whose backgrounds are under-represented in our sector. We want the process to be accessible to everyone, so if you’d benefit from any adjustment to take part fully at any stage, just let us know and we’ll make it happen. And if you’re excited by this role but don’t tick every ‘helpful if you have’, please apply anyway.

  • Communications Graduate

    About Chayn

Chayn is a global nonprofit making healing accessible for all survivors of gender-based violence. By reimagining technology, we create online resources that are trauma-informed, multilingual, and feminist, supporting survivors to heal at their own pace, wherever they are.

Chayn started in 2013 to provide survivors of abuse with accurate, diverse and accessible information. Since our beginnings, over 700,000 people have accessed our award-winning work online, generating 1.2 million page views. Up to 70% of our volunteers are survivors of abuse, which means not only are our projects user-centred; they are user-led.

We are experts in trauma-informed work and have developed trauma-informed design principles that we apply at every level of the organisation, from HR to user research and UX/UI. We are one of only a few feminist technology organisations tackling gender-based violence while creating and maintaining openly licensed products and code.

While we’ve been going for over 10 years, Chayn was entirely volunteer-led until 2020, when we started to grow our team of paid staff. We are now a core team of 11, with up to 10 supporting contractors and a team of contributing volunteers, working together remotely from all over the world.

    Communications Graduate

⚓ Location: Fully remote, you can be based anywhere in the world

    ⏱️ Hours: Full-time, 30 hours per week

    💰 Salary: £1,800/month

📜 Contract: 12 months with possible extension subject to funding and performance

👤 Reporting to: Head of Communications

    🕰️ Deadline: Tuesday, June 30, 2026

    The role

We’re looking for a creative, thoughtful and organised Communications Graduate to help us tell people about Chayn’s work and reach more survivors, supporters and partners.

You’ll work across our social media, newsletters, website, campaigns and organisational communications. You might spend one day turning research about gender-based violence into an accessible social media post, another helping launch a new resource, and another looking at our analytics to understand what is reaching people and what we could do differently.

This is a graduate role, so we don’t expect you to arrive knowing everything. You’ll receive guidance and support from our Head of Communications while gaining practical experience across digital communications, campaigning, storytelling and content management in an international feminist nonprofit.

    Your brief

You’ll help us create communications that are clear, useful and recognisably Chayn.

    Your work will include:

    • Drafting and scheduling content for Chayn’s social media channels
    • Writing and editing newsletters, blogs, website copy and campaign materials
    • Helping plan and deliver campaigns, resource launches and organisational announcements
    • Turning complex research and sensitive subjects into content that is accessible, engaging and easy to understand
    • Creating visual content and adapting existing templates and assets
    • Keeping our website, blog and resource pages accurate and up to date
    • Helping manage communications calendars, content trackers and digital assets
    • Engaging thoughtfully with our online community
    • Supporting our commercial partnerships efforts via LinkedIn and our newsletter
    • Monitoring social media, website and newsletter performance and helping us learn from the results
    • Researching relevant news, trends, awareness dates and conversations relating to gender-based violence, technology and survivor support
    • Supporting communications for events, partnerships, fundraising and organisational updates
    • Helping coordinate communications requests from across the Chayn team

    Your biggest challenge

Communicating about gender-based violence requires care.

Our content needs to be honest about harm without being sensationalist, and warm without becoming vague or patronising. We speak to people who may be experiencing trauma, as well as supporters, partners, funders and organisations working in the sector.

You’ll need to think carefully about language, context, accessibility and power. Sometimes you’ll be working with complicated research or difficult subject matter and will need to find a way to make it understandable without losing its meaning.

We don’t expect you to do this alone. You’ll work closely with the Head of Communications and other members of the team, using Chayn’s trauma-informed design principles and safeguarding approach to guide your work.

    Your profile

We’re interested in people who care about language, ideas and how communications can contribute to social change.

You may have recently graduated in communications, marketing, journalism, media, design, humanities, social sciences, international development, gender studies or another relevant subject. We also recognise that people develop communications skills in many different ways, so we welcome applications from people whose experience does not fit neatly into one academic route.

    Essential

    • Strong written English and the ability to communicate ideas clearly
    • A thoughtful and sensitive approach to writing about gender-based violence, trauma and survivor support
    • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
    • An interest in digital communications, storytelling and campaigning
    • The ability to research a subject and summarise what you find
    • Confidence using Google Workspace or similar digital tools
    • The ability to manage your time and work independently in a remote team
    • Openness to feedback and a willingness to learn
    • An understanding of intersectionality and systems of oppression
    • An affinity with Chayn’s mission and organisational values

    Desirable

You do not need to meet all of these:

    • Experience creating social media posts, newsletters, blogs, videos or website content
    • Experience gained through an internship, student project, volunteering, activism or paid work
    • Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, Hootsuite, and Notion
    • An understanding of digital accessibility or writing for different online audiences
    • Basic experience using analytics to understand how content is performing
    • Familiarity with SEO
    • Experience working remotely or as part of an international or multicultural team
    • Knowledge of another language

    What you’ll gain

During the 12 months, you’ll have the opportunity to:

    • Build a varied portfolio of published communications work
    • Learn how trauma-informed and survivor-centred principles shape communications in practice
    • Gain experience across campaigns, social media, newsletters, websites and digital analytics
    • Work alongside colleagues across programmes, survivor services, fundraising, research and operations
    • Develop your writing, editing, planning and content production skills
    • Learn how a small, international feminist organisation communicates with different audiences around the world

    Inclusion

At Chayn, inclusion and accessibility are at the core of our work. We welcome applicants from all walks of life. Given the nature of our work and our global audience, we particularly encourage applications from those who grew up in the Global South or Majority World.

We also encourage applications from people of colour, LGBTQ+ people—we are a trans-inclusive organisation—people with disabilities, and people who have experienced exclusion or marginalisation. Up to 70% of our team members are survivors of abuse, so if you are one too and are thinking of applying, know that you will be in a safe and affirming space.

We aim to make our recruitment process as accessible as possible, but know there may be more we can do. If you have particular accessibility needs or require additional support, please contact us so we can think together about how to make the process easier for you.

    👤 Reporting to: CEO

    🕰️ Deadline: Tuesday, June 30, 2026

    The role

We’re looking for a thoughtful, organised and motivated Business Development Graduate to help Chayn build the relationships and resources we need to sustain and grow our work.

You’ll work across fundraising, grants, donor engagement and partnerships. You might spend one day researching a funder whose priorities align with ours, another helping prepare a grant application, and another drafting an update that shows supporters what their funding has made possible.

This is a recent graduate role, so we don’t expect you to arrive knowing everything. You’ll work closely with our CEO and other members of the team, gaining practical experience in fundraising and business development within a small, international feminist nonprofit.

    Your brief

You’ll help us identify opportunities, build strong relationships and communicate clearly about Chayn’s work and impact.

    Your work will include:

    • Researching trusts, foundations, institutional donors and other funding opportunities that align with Chayn’s work
    • Helping prepare grant applications, proposals, budgets and supporting documents
    • Maintaining accurate records of funding opportunities, applications, deadlines and reporting requirements
    • Supporting the coordination and delivery of funded projects, including monitoring deadlines and gathering information from across the team
    • Helping prepare grant reports and other updates for funders
    • Collecting and organising monitoring, evaluation and impact information
    • Supporting individual giving campaigns and fundraising events
    • Researching prospective donors and opportunities to grow Chayn’s supporter community
    • Drafting donor communications, including thank-you messages, appeals, newsletters and project updates
    • Helping develop thoughtful supporter journeys and donor stewardship
    • Supporting research and outreach for potential partnerships
    • Helping coordinate online and in-person events for funders, partners and supporters
    • Monitoring fundraising activity and helping us understand what is working
    • Supporting fundraising reporting for Chayn’s leadership team and Board of Trustees
    • Keeping donor and partner information organised and up to date

    Your biggest challenge

Fundraising for work on gender-based violence can be complicated.

You’ll need to communicate the urgency and value of Chayn’s work without sensationalising survivors’ experiences or presenting people only through the harm they have experienced. Our fundraising must reflect the same trauma-informed, survivor-centred and feminist principles that guide the rest of our organisation.

You’ll also need to balance different priorities and deadlines. Funding applications often require input from several people, detailed information and quick turnaround times. You’ll need to be organised, ask good questions and follow up with people while recognising that you are working within a small and busy team.

We don’t expect you to manage this alone. You’ll receive guidance from the CEO and work with colleagues across Chayn to develop your skills and understanding.

    Your profile

We’re interested in people who are curious about how social-impact organisations build relationships, secure funding and create the conditions for their work to continue.

You may have recently graduated in humanities, social sciences, international development, business, communications, gender studies or another relevant subject. We also recognise that useful skills can be developed through volunteering, activism, community organising and other routes, so we welcome applicants whose experience does not fit neatly into one academic pathway!

    • The ability to research a topic and identify the most relevant information
    • Good organisational skills and close attention to detail

    • The ability to summarise complex information clearly and persuasively
    • A proactive approach and willingness to take initiative

    • Familiarity with grant applications, proposal writing or donor reporting
    • Experience conducting prospect or funding research
