CATALYST NOW IS SEEKING A FUNDRAISING SPECIALIST

CATALYST NOW, THE GLOBAL UMBRELLA MOVEMENT FOR THE WORLD’S SOCIAL INNOVATORS

Catalyst Now (formerly Catalyst 2030) is the global movement for social innovation. We connect over 7,000 social innovators, from grassroots initiatives to philanthropic organisations, from every corner of the globe, to drive collaborative change.

Our mission is to co-create spaces where the world’s social innovators connect, collaborate and contribute to transformational change.

    OUR VISION FOR 2025- 2029

The world is not short of solutions. It is short of alignment. Every day, millions of social innovators work on climate, inequality, health, livelihoods, and other SDGs. Yet most efforts remain under-recognised, under-resourced and disconnected from power, capital, and policy.

That’s where Catalyst Now comes in. We’re building the global umbrella movement for social innovators, across sectors and borders, to turn fragmented efforts into systemic change.

Our journey, which began as a WhatsApp group of visionary social entrepreneurs, has evolved into a global movement of more than 7,400 members representing over 4,900 organisations across 150+ countries.

    AI Policy

The rapid and widespread adoption of generative AI has raised serious questions about the ethics and principles of its use and the social, economic, and environmental impacts of these tools, developed and largely owned and controlled by a few powerful corporations and billionaires.

We do not use AI software to screen applications or to conduct interviews. We recognize the effort, time, and intent that each individual takes to make an application and honor that by reciprocating with our own time, effort, and resources. • Expression of Interest: Project founders in neglected areas

    Application Deadline: July 19, 2026

    Employment Type: Flexible

    Location: Remote

    Workplace type: Fully remote

    Compensation: $60,000 – $105,000 / year Fill EOI form (pro-rated for 3 to 6 months)

    Summary

We are seeking expressions of interest from people who could found a new organization focused on:

Highly neglected animals: insects, wild animals, shrimp, fish, etc, or

AI and animals: AI alignment and governance for animal welfare, strategic actions considering transformative AI, AI for wild animals, etc.

Tech for animals: welfare tech, precision welfare tech, breeding for welfare, etc.

We are looking for both founders with a specific idea and those motivated to develop or execute on one. Depending on fit, Rethink Priorities can offer 3-6 months of funded runway and various operational set-ups for you to pursue your work, such as a Special Project, hiring you as an Entrepreneur in Residence, or helping you incubate into an independent organization.

To express interest, please fill out the short form (15-20min) here by the end of the day on July 19, 2026

    Background

At Rethink Priorities, we work on some of the most neglected problems in animal welfare: from insect welfare to wild animals to the implications of AI for alternative proteins.

Neglected animals represent the vast majority of the world’s sentient animals, yet they receive only a tiny fraction of animal advocacy resources and attention. Meanwhile, rapid AI development has the potential to change the world with implications for all animals. These areas remain under-addressed, not because there’s no tractable path forward, but because far fewer organizations are working on them than the scale of the problem warrants. You can help change that.

This post is an expression of interest. We want to understand who’s out there with the motivation and potential to found something new in this space.

Which animal topics are we focused on?

We are looking for founders for “frontier” issues – issues that are potentially important and tractable but currently underexplored relative to mainstream animal advocacy.

    Neglected animal issues. Examples include:

Wild animal welfare – reducing large-scale suffering experienced by animals in natural environments

Invertebrate welfare – insects, crustaceans, and other animals whose sentience and moral status are poorly understood

Aquatic animal welfare – fish, shrimp, and other aquatic species in farming, wild capture, and related contexts

AI, technology, and animals. Examples include:

AI and Animals – Rapid AI development has the potential to change the world with implications for all animals. We want people to help steer the animal movement through an AI-transformed future towards the best world for animals. This could include AI alignment and governance for animal welfare, strategic actions that consider transformative AI for animals, AI for wild animals, etc.

Novel technologies and interventions – Welfare technology, when approached with caution, can be widely adopted and improve the lives of animals at scale. This could be precision welfare tech, breeding methods, genetic tools, or other emerging approaches.

    Other

    ● This list isn’t exhaustive. If you have a different angle in mind that doesn’t quite match the above list, we are interested.

    ● We are also keen to find founders focused on neglected geographies: regions with intensive farming but less existing advocacy infrastructure.

Small teams are already getting outsized results

The case for founding in this space is not theoretical. Organizations founded in the last few years in these spaces are already having a significant impact:

    ● The Shrimp Welfare Project (founded in 2021, not through Rethink Priorities but using our research) has secured electrical stunning commitments, expected to reduce the suffering of around 4.5 billion shrimps per year, with a credible path to helping 100 billion shrimps annually. It is now an ACE Recommended Charity.

    ● An insect-focused initiative we supported has become a leading voice on insect farming, with its work shaping the narrative about critical issues facing the industry. ● Shared Roads, an initiative launched this year by Sentient Futures, is already engaging with governments on how driverless vehicle policy should account for animals. ● The Center for Wild Animal Welfare (launched in late 2025 and supported as an RP Special Project) has secured pro-wild animal welfare debate and tabled amendments in the UK Parliament and secured national media coverage within months of starting.

A few motivated people with a tractable idea and modest funding can move an entire neglected field. We want to help start the next organization on this list.

    Who are we looking for?

The qualities we care most about are:

Impact focus – You want to help as many animals as possible, and you’re willing to follow the evidence on how best to do that, even when it points somewhere unglamorous.

Experience – Our ideal candidate has a track record of delivery. They are someone who can set ambitious goals and achieve them. Backgrounds in leadership, research, advocacy, policy, operations, or building things are all useful. Note that animal-specific knowledge is helpful but not required, and strong generalists without an animal welfare background have founded excellent organizations in this space.

Entrepreneurial mind-set – You are self-motivated, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to drive things forward without much existing structure. You don’t need to have founded anything before.

You might be in one of two situations:

    1. You have an existing idea or area of expertise. Maybe you’ve been developing a specific project or have some expertise in a neglected area that you want to turn into impact. You want support to pursue that avenue, such as funding, operational support, research capacity, mentorship, or strategic support.

    2. You’re motivated but haven’t settled on an idea. You’d seriously consider founding or co-founding a new organization focused on a frontier animal issue if the conditions were right.

Our key question is: would you be willing to make the switch to working on this full-time if you had 3–6 months of funded runway?

    What we can offer

Depending on fit, support could take several forms.

We are keen and ready to offer the following:

Funding – we can offer 3-6 months of funded runway, at a level that lets you step away from your current role and gives you the space to explore, develop, and launch.

Research support – Rethink Priorities is among the world’s most experienced research teams on neglected animal issues. Our research team will be able to support your decision-making at every step of developing your idea and project.

Operational support – Rethink Priorities’ Special Project team has supported numerous organizations with operations, finance, and HR to help them get off the ground quickly.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence role – You could become our in-house entrepreneur who can get things done, drive change, and help new projects get off the ground.

If there is demand, we are also exploring offering the following:

Executive coaching to help you leave your current position – it can be hard for top talent to wind down their current work and create the space to start something new. Coaching and support to help wrap up existing projects can be useful here.

Incubation into an independent organization – structured support to help you build and spin out as a standalone organization (this could be via Rethink Priorities, or we could support you via other programs such as Ambitious Impact).

Ongoing coaching and mentorship – to help you drive your project to succeed.

We’re at an early stage here. This is a genuine expression of interest, not a structured program with fixed slots. We want to understand what’s out there before deciding how best to support it.

    How to respond

To express interest, please fill out the short form (15-20min) here. Tell us about yourself, what you’re considering, and what kind of support would be most useful. No polished proposal is needed.

If you’re unsure whether to respond, please err on the side of doing so. Completing the form is not a commitment; it simply helps us understand who might be interested. Note also that there is no fixed start date. Even if you cannot start until sometime next year, we would love to hear from you now.

Please respond by the end of the day on July 19, 2026. We’ll read every response and aim to follow up with those where there’s a potential fit by end of July.

Your response goes to a small team at Rethink Priorities, and we’ll only share it further with your permission.

Please share this post with anyone you think might be a good fit.

Questions? Contact Samuel Hilton (samuel@rethinkpriorities.org) at Rethink Priorities.

Please note that from 4 July to 12 July, Rethink Priorities is on mid-year break, and we will be unable to respond to emails during that time.

    About Rethink Priorities

Rethink Priorities is a think-and-do tank dedicated to informing decisions made by high-impact organizations, funders, and policymakers across various cause areas. We aim to identify emerging areas – such as invertebrate welfare and digital consciousness – before they become crowded, and to influence trajectories while fields are still being shaped.

Within animal welfare, our recent work includes:

    ● Pioneering research comparing welfare across species through our Moral Weight Project
    ● Bringing to light the important and neglected area of invertebrate welfare
    ● Strategic work on EU farmed animal welfare advocacy in 2025, influencing $10m of grants
    ● Building a coordinated roadmap for fish welfare in Europe with 18 leading organizations,
    ● Developing a prioritized research agenda on insecticide welfare impacts in partnership with the Wild Animal Initiative

    ● Supporting nine early-stage organizations through our Special Projects program You can review our public work here, as well as our 2025 results and 2026 plans.

  • Researcher or Senior Researcher

    About the Position and Team

Rethink Priorities (RP) is seeking a highly analytical Researcher or Senior Researcher to investigate complex questions arising at the intersection of AI and animals — taking priority research projects from vague, important questions through to delivered, decision-useful output.

This position sits within RP’s Animal Welfare Department, which advances and pioneers evidence-based, reason-driven change for animals. Within the department, the AI × Animals Program works to steer the animal movement through an AI-transformed future toward the best possible world for animals. We believe AI will significantly affect animal welfare and advocacy, and that far too little work is going into navigating that transition well for animals. We pair disciplined prioritisation research — mapping where AI matters for animals and which interventions are worth funding, incubating, or scaling — with an action arm that builds talent and coordination infrastructure.

To get a sense of the questions you would investigate, see the executive summaries of our reports on AI and aquaculture (Part 1, Part 2) and on AI and cultivated meat. Many projects are self-generated from questions we think deserve attention; others are commissioned by mission-aligned funders and advocacy organisations. A typical project means scoping a fuzzy question, choosing a proportionate method, and producing something a decision-maker can act on.

You will own research questions end to end and exercise real judgement about what to investigate and how. The level of autonomy scales with seniority:

    • At the Researcher level, you’ll execute projects with regular guidance from your manager on methodology and prioritisation, while taking increasing ownership of day-to-day decisions.
    • At the Senior Researcher level, you’ll scope and run projects with minimal oversight, take the initiative to learn methods you haven’t used before, and be consulted by program leadership on strategic decisions such as which projects the program should take on.

Reporting and collaboration. The successful candidate will report to Kevin Xia (Senior Research Manager) and collaborate across the program and the wider Animal Welfare Department.

This role is open at two levels — Researcher and Senior Researcher — and you may indicate which you’re applying for. We may make an offer at a level above or below the one you applied for if the hiring process suggests it’s a better fit; the final level (and corresponding salary) is set using RP’s title structure and salary algorithm based on demonstrated competencies and relevant experience.

    Key Responsibilities

As a Researcher / Senior Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:

    • Scoping vague but important questions around AI x Animals — choosing the right depth, angle, and methodology for each, from literature reviews to modelling, data analysis, or expert interviews.
    • Conducting independent research on complex questions, addressing uncertainty and competing perspectives explicitly.
    • Engaging external stakeholders to understand their needs and shape deliverables to their specifications.
    • Producing decision-useful outputs from inception to delivery, in the best-fit format (report, model, dashboard), translated into practical recommendations for decision-makers.
    • Managing projects end to end — keeping them on track, reporting progress, and proactively identifying mitigations when barriers arise.

The balance of these responsibilities, and the autonomy you’ll have, depends on the level you’re hired at. At the Senior Researcher level, you will own these responsibilities at higher autonomy and help co-create the overall research strategy for the program. You will also build and steward more external relationships with funders, advocates, and field experts.

    Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

    Skills and Competencies

    Required for all applicants:

    • An abiding commitment to RP’s mission for animals — you keep impact at the centre of project decisions and prioritise it over interestingness.
    • Strong applied-research judgement. You can take a vague, important question, scope it sensibly, choose sound methodology, and reach a defensible answer under time pressure.
    • Strong analytical and quantitative reasoning. Ability and willingness to use, build, and interpret models and quantitative concepts. (Deep statistical or programming expertise is not required — see “nice to have.”)
    • Clear written communication. You explain a chain of reasoning and convey complex ideas to decision-makers, not just to peers, and organise writing for its intended audience.
    • Reasoning transparency. You give caveated, decision-useful answers under uncertainty — documenting key steps, stating uncertainties, and sourcing major claims — rather than waiting for certainty.
    • A steadfast commitment to truthseeking, intellectual openness to diverse viewpoints, and research ethics.
    • Resourcefulness and problem-solving. You find tractable ways into open-ended problems.
    • Self- and project management in a remote, distributed, asynchronous team — setting and meeting realistic goals and keeping work organised.
    • Collaboration and stakeholder engagement. You work effectively toward shared goals and interact professionally with colleagues and external partners.

Additionally expected at the Senior Researcher level:

    • Greater autonomy and ownership — you initiate, plan, and run projects with little oversight, and refine your approach so recurring problems don’t recur.
    • Strategic and critical thinking at program scale — anticipating risks and opportunities and prioritizing between projects.
    • Proactive outreach — independently building and maintaining external relationships and representing RP credibly in professional settings.
    • Review and feedback — giving honest, constructive, timely feedback on others’ work across clarity, rigor, and impact.

    Nice to have (none required):

    • Skill with strategic decision-making tools (e.g. stakeholder mapping, scenario analysis).
    • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts or model evaluation.
    • A fluent, AI-native working style — you already use current AI tools effectively in your own research workflow.
    • Domain expertise in a relevant priority area (e.g. AI strategy, safety, or governance; farmed animal welfare; alternative proteins; or wild animal welfare).
    • Experience working or volunteering in the AI safety or animal advocacy space.
    • Familiarity with the ideas and methods used in high-impact, evidence-led philanthropy.
    • Proficiency with R or Python.

    What We Offer

    Compensation

    • We offer an annual salary between $80,000 – $135,000 USD pre-tax for a full-time position, prorated for part-time work.
    • The exact salary will be based on the candidate’s prior relevant experience and corresponding title level, and calculated using RP’s salary algorithm.
    • Compensation is not restricted to the currencies listed above.
    • To ensure fairness across the entire organization, RP does not negotiate salaries.

    Other Benefits

    • Opportunity to contribute to a fast-growing, high-impact organization — our research is used by key decision-makers who influence the distribution of hundreds of millions of charitable dollars.
    • Remote-first environment, including flexible work hours and schedule.
    • Comprehensive global benefits program, including statutory benefits as required by local law, and supplemental benefits specific to each country (varies by location)
    • Generous paid time off (PTO) and unpaid leave, including:
      • Unlimited vacation with a minimum number of required statutory days off
      • “Mandated” 3 weeks total mid- and end-year organization-wide breaks
      • Unlimited (within reason) personal and sick paid and unpaid leave
      • Parental leave — at least 4 – 9 months of a combination of paid and unpaid leave, available prior to and/or during the first 2 years after a child’s birth or adoption
      • Other paid and unpaid leave (e.g., bereavement)
    • Technology stipend of $2,000 USD equivalent every 3 years for work and office equipment.
    • AI tools budget of $40 USD equivalent monthly.
    • Professional development budget amount subject to leadership approval that renews yearly.
    • Learning opportunities, including workshops/training sessions and 10% of work time dedicated to professional and personal development.
    • Paid work trips, including one annual all-staff Mega Team Retreat and relevant conferences.
    • Virtual co-working spaces, including a private Rethink Priorities Focusmate group
    • RP Peer Support Program for New Employees.
    • Other benefits at the discretion of RP Leadership.
    • A caring team that values respectful work relations and a healthy work-life balance.
    • Opportunities to grow/advance your career and engage in professional development.
    • Low administrative bureaucracy.
    • We don’t provide snacks, but we could mail you a box of Oreos if you want!

    Our Hiring Process

There are 4 evaluation stages. Only candidates who meet the bar at a given stage proceed. We aim to complete each stage’s assessments within two weeks, so you can learn quickly whether you’ll proceed.

Stage 1 — Initial Screening. A short set of written prompts in the application aimed to be completed in around 60 minutes. We evaluate these rather than CV’s.

    We score anonymized responses for:

    • Alignment with our mission and motivation for the work
    • Ability to perform research tasks that are relevant for this role
    • Relevant knowledge and experience in the fields relevant to this role

Stage 2 — Paid Skills Assessment.

    • You will complete a standardized, time-boxed task that mimics the actual job (3–5 hours)
    • You’ll be paid $45 per hour for the test task

    Stage 3 — Interview

    • We will ask you questions across the skills and experience the role requires
    • Most questions will be sent in advance; occasionally, we may tell you about the topic of a question in advance, but not the specific question
    • You will have a chance to ask questions about the role, the Animal Welfare Department and RP broadly

Stage 4 — Reference Checks. We ask two references about your work, probing independent execution on hard problems in particular.

We hope to hire for this role by end of September.

    YOU WILL:

Cost Model Development – 28 Days

    • Lead the design and development of a climate-SRHR cost model for Ethiopia, estimating the incremental cost of climate-proofing existing SRMCH investments
    • Select and apply an appropriate costing methodology (e.g., ingredients-based costing, activity-based costing, or incremental cost analysis), drawing on established frameworks from WHO, the World Bank, or equivalent sources
    • Populate the model using publicly available datasets (e.g., World Bank, WHO UHC Cost-Effectiveness Compendium, DHS) alongside Ethiopia-specific inputs provided by the In-Country Specialist
    • Document all assumptions, data sources, and uncertainty ranges explicitly to ensure the model is transparent and reproducible
    • Collaborate with the YLabs team to refine the cost model approach and ensure technical alignment with established climate-SRHR risks, approaches, and priorities

Health Benefit Estimation and ROI Analysis – 23 Days

    • Develop a return-on-investment (ROI) framework estimating the health benefits of climate-adaptive SRMCH interventions compared to a business-as-usual baseline
    • Estimate health outcomes associated with each intervention across a spectrum from light-touch to intensive adaptations, using accepted evaluation and benefit-estimation approaches
    • Model the projected amortization of climate-adaptive SRMCH investments over a 5–10 year window
    • Ensure the ROI logic follows accepted health economics conventions and is structured for replication across other country contexts
    • Collaborate with the YLabs team to refine the health benefit estimation approach and ensure technical appropriateness and comprehensiveness for the intended audience

    Decision-Support Tool Development – 4 Days

    • Support the YLabs team and in-country specialist to translate model outputs into accessible, actionable tools for Ministry of Health stakeholders and donors, including a tradeoff analysis tool and example implementation roadmaps
    • Document a reusable costing methodology that enables other countries and researchers to replicate and adapt the model
    • Stress-test model outputs with the YLabs team and in-country specialist to ensure results are credible to Ethiopian ministry and donor audiences

    YOU ARE:

    • Collaborative and integrative, comfortable working with quantitative data, qualitative program inputs, and contextual knowledge from in-country partners to inform your modelling
    • Detail oriented and analytically rigorous, with deep experience building cost models that withstand donor and peer scrutiny
    • Transparent in your methodology, with a habit of documenting assumptions and flagging uncertainty
    • Self-motivated and reliable, able to manage your time and responsibilities independently while contributing to overall team success

    YOU HAVE:

    • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in SRMNCH health program costing, economic / health evaluation, or a closely related field
    • Demonstrated experience designing and building cost models or cost-effectiveness analyses that have been reviewed by donors, governments, or for publication
    • Demonstrated experience estimating the health benefits / health risks associated with different potential intervention pathways
    • Familiarity with established costing frameworks and data sources, including WHO and World Bank tools
    • Strong organizational and communication skills, including excellent written communication skills in English, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and accessible summaries
    • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including proficiency in Excel or equivalent modelling tools
    • Basic proficiency with Google Workspace

    DESIRABLE:

    • Experience working at the intersection of climate change and health, including climate-health costing, climate adaptation investment planning, or related fields. Experience at the intersection of climate change and SRHR is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with Ethiopia’s health system data and/or prior work on SRMNCH and/or climate programs in Ethiopia
    • Experience working on program design and evaluation for SRHR and/or climate-health programming
    • Prior experience working with international NGO teams, bilateral donors, or multilateral organizations NGOs (e.g., FCDO, Gates Foundation, UNFPA, World Bank)
    • Experience presenting technical findings to government or donor audiences
    • Advanced (graduate-level) training in public health, economics, evaluation, climate adaptation, or another related field.
