  • Applied AI Fellow

    About GitLab Foundation

The GitLab Foundation exists to help more people afford a better life. We focus on increasing lifetime earnings for individuals by identifying, funding, and scaling the most effective pathways to economic mobility. Our North Star is to maximize lifetime earnings gains for every dollar deployed, with an ambitious goal of generating more than $100 in lifetime earnings gains for every $1 invested.

We are evolving beyond a traditional grantmaking foundation into a platform for high-impact philanthropy. In addition to deploying our own capital, we work with donors, foundations, and partners to direct more resources toward solutions that create measurable improvements in people’s lives. Our work spans four complementary areas: high-impact grantmaking, collaborative capital vehicles that mobilize funding at scale, advisory services that help donors and foundations maximize their impact, and knowledge and intelligence products that enable better philanthropic decision-making.

At the core of our approach is a commitment to rigor, transparency, and measurable results. We combine impact modeling, data, research, technology, and practical implementation experience to identify opportunities that can deliver outsized social returns—and help others do the same. Learn more about the GitLab Foundation by visiting our website and reviewing our public Handbook.

    The Team

The GitLab Foundation is a high-performing, fully remote team that moves quickly, values curiosity, and is deeply results-oriented. Grounded in our CREDIT values, we bring together diverse experience across philanthropy, nonprofits, the private sector, impact investing, and research — combining that range with collaboration, empathy, and strategic clarity to drive meaningful, measurable impact. Our culture is built on respect, humility, and open debate, with a strong bias for action. We hold ourselves to high standards, operate with transparency and ownership, and take initiative without waiting for perfect clarity. Priorities evolve, ambiguity is the norm, and we embrace it — iterating and improving as we go.

    About the Role

The GitLab Foundation is seeking an Applied AI Fellow to help transform how our organization leverages artificial intelligence. This is a six-month, full-time fellowship focused on identifying opportunities to apply AI, building practical solutions, and accelerating AI adoption across the Foundation, with the potential to transition into a permanent role based on organizational needs and performance.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will partner with teams across the organization to redesign workflows, automate manual processes, build new tools, and embed AI into our daily operations. From grantmaking and impact measurement to communications, partnerships, knowledge management, and operations, you will implement AI solutions that improve efficiency, strengthen decision-making, and increase organizational impact.

You are a technical builder who enjoys solving complex problems and turning emerging AI capabilities into reliable, scalable systems. You are comfortable writing code when needed, integrating APIs, structuring data, and building beyond the limits of no-code tools. You understand how to design solutions that are maintainable, reusable, secure, and easy for others to extend over time. You can evaluate and audit AI-generated code and no-code outputs, identify architectural issues, and make sound engineering decisions around data, permissions, access controls, and system design. You thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.

In 2026, the Chronicle of Philanthropy recognized the GitLab Foundation as an example of how innovative philanthropic organizations are integrating AI into their work. We see that recognition as a starting point. This fellowship will play a central role in helping us deepen and scale that work.

Looking ahead, we are exploring the creation of a small, focused product and engineering function to build AI capabilities for both the Foundation and the broader economic mobility and philanthropic sector. This fellowship offers the opportunity to help lay that foundation. The systems, workflows, and technical practices you develop will inform that future function and could position you as a founding member as our AI capabilities continue to grow.

    Key Responsibilities

Implement AI Solutions Across the Foundation

    • Assess the Foundation’s current AI tools to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and underutilized capabilities, then recommend and implement improvements.
    • Design solutions with long-term maintainability in mind by creating reusable components, documenting technical decisions, implementing appropriate security controls, and ensuring workflows can be extended and supported as organizational needs evolve.
    • Partner closely with the Chief Programs & Partnerships Officer and others across the Foundation to identify and prioritize opportunities where AI can improve workflows, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness.
    • Assess whether underlying data is clean, structured, and well-integrated before or alongside building a solution, and recommend improvements, understanding that messy data undermine even well-designed AI tools.
    • Design, build, and implement AI-powered workflows, automations, agents, and other solutions that reduce manual work and improve quality.
    • Integrate AI into existing processes and systems while continuously iterating based on user feedback and evolving organizational needs.
    • Document scalable workflows and reusable solutions that can be adopted across the organization.
    • Stay current on emerging AI tools and capabilities, and run quick pilots to test new ideas before committing to a full build.

Drive AI Adoption & Organizational Capability

    • Serve as the Foundation’s internal AI champion, helping colleagues confidently and responsibly adopt AI in their daily work.
    • Develop prompt libraries, playbooks, templates, and other resources that support consistent and effective AI use.
    • Facilitate training sessions, office hours, demonstrations, and one-on-one coaching to increase AI literacy and adoption.
    • Help establish best practices and governance for the secure, responsible, and effective use of AI.
    • Track basic adoption and efficiency metrics for what you build and teach, and use them — along with lessons learned — to decide what to build or teach next.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Personal Attributes

    • 2+ years of hands-on experience building software, internal tools, data pipelines, AI-powered workflows, or automations in a professional, academic, or independent setting. We care more about what you’ve built than your job title.
    • Experience building tools that people actually use, with an understanding of maintainability, modular design, documentation, version control, and iterative improvement.
    • Strong technical skills, including experience with Python and/or JavaScript, APIs, structured data, and building solutions beyond the capabilities of no-code tools.
    • Able to evaluate and improve AI-generated code and no-code workflows, identifying opportunities to improve architecture, reliability, performance, security, and maintainability.
    • Understands how to build scalable, reusable systems, including thoughtful approaches to configuration, shared components, data models, access controls, and responsible handling of sensitive data.
    • Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills, with the ability to identify opportunities where AI can improve organizational effectiveness and translate them into practical solutions.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly, work effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues, and help others adopt new tools through documentation, training, and coaching.
    • Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable with ambiguity, demonstrating initiative, sound judgment, integrity, humility, and alignment with the GitLab Foundation’s CREDIT values.

    Requirements, Compensation, and Benefits

    • Location: Fully remote. Must be based in the U.S.
    • Base Annual Salary: $90,000
    • Estimated Total Compensation: $120,000–$145,000, including the Foundation’s 10% employer 401(k) contribution and comprehensive benefits.
    • Benefits
      • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage (full premium coverage for team members, spouses, and dependents).
      • 401(k) contribution: GitLab Foundation contributes 10% of your salary (no employee contribution required).
      • Unlimited vacation, sick time, and other paid time off.
      • Additional team member benefits.

    How to Apply

To apply, please submit your cover letter, resume, and either (1) a link to something you’ve built (such as a tool, workflow, automation, repository, or project) accompanied by a brief 1–2 page write-up describing what you built, your approach, and what you would do differently today, or (2) a 1–2 page writing sample if you do not have a relevant project to share. Please combine all application materials into a single PDF or Word document and email them to hiring@gitlabfoundation.org by August 14, 2026. We expect to notify candidates selected for interviews no later than August 25, 2026.

Applicants must already have unrestricted U.S. work authorization that does not require current or future employer sponsorship. GitLab Foundation is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse, inclusive team and a work environment rooted in our CREDIT values. We strive to cultivate a culture that is inclusive, respectful, and empowering for all.

  • VP of Strategic Communications

    Job description

    About CDI

The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) is a non-partisan, non-profit dedicated to equipping the next generation of Americans with the skills to communicate and collaborate across lines of difference. We work with U.S. colleges and universities by providing co-curricular programming for students, professional development for faculty and staff, and strategic guidance to leadership. Our goal is to foster constructive dialogue at every level of the institution and to create the conditions for lasting organizational change. CDI was co-founded by psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the bestselling author of The Righteous Mind and The Anxious Generation.

    About the Role

CDI is seeking a strategic, media-savvy communicator to serve as Vice President of Strategic Communications. Reporting to the Chief Growth Officer, the VP will be responsible for establishing CDI as the leading national voice on constructive dialogue in higher education and converting that visibility into audience growth and organizational credibility.

This is a hands-on builder role. The VP will lead CDI’s communications strategy, earned media, executive profile-building, messaging and narrative, editorial leadership of CDI’s thought leadership and newsletter, organic social, and crisis and reputation management. Initially, the VP will operate as an individual contributor supported by fractional and contractor resources. Over time, the VP will manage a Communications & Content Manager, who will serve as the editorial and production engine for owned content.

The ideal candidate brings 10–12 years of experience in strategic communications, strong relationships across national and higher education media, and a track record of building organizational reputation in complex, high-stakes environments.

    Responsibilities

Lead CDI’s communications strategy and narrative

    • Set the annual communications and thought leadership strategy, defining editorial priorities and narrative direction in service of CDI’s mission and earned revenue goals.
    • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to the Executive Director and Chief Growth Officer, helping assess trade-offs, evaluate reputational risk, and align leadership on key messaging decisions before work advances.
    • Own CDI’s messaging guide and narrative framework, ensuring consistent, politically grounded communication across all external channels.
    • Monitor CDI’s reputational landscape — including dynamics around partners, founders, and key stakeholders — alongside political, cultural, and higher education trends, to proactively identify risks and opportunities and advise leadership.

Elevate CDI’s executive and thought leadership profile

    • Lead CDI’s executive visibility program, building the Executive Director and other key CDI figures’ profiles through op-eds, podcast appearances, conference keynotes, and media placements, and preparing and coaching the Executive Director for public appearances and interviews.
    • Partner with CDI’s thought-leadership bench (across the Research, Education, Culture Change teams) to translate research findings into media-ready narratives and public-facing content.

Build and own CDI’s earned media presence

    • Drive proactive media outreach to national, higher education, and mission-aligned press; build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and influencers.
    • Lead rapid response and crisis communications, managing reputational risk with speed and sound judgment.

    Lead owned media and editorial

    • Provide editorial leadership for CDI’s higher education newsletter and blog; manage the Communications & Content Manager to maintain publishing cadence and quality.
    • Own organic social strategy (brand, executive, and thought-leadership content), with the Communications & Content Manager executing the unified calendar.
    • Coordinate the thought-leadership editorial calendar with the Impact team, Partnerships, and the thought-leadership bench.

Support external relationships and cross-functional work

    • Support CDI’s broader external relationships — including with funders, board members, and senior institutional partners — by ensuring CDI’s communications reflect the organization’s impact, credibility, and strategic direction.
    • Partner with the Senior Manager of Demand Generation to connect comms outputs — earned media, newsletter audience, thought leadership — to Marketing Qualified Pipeline, ensuring visibility translates into partnerships opportunities and earned revenue.

Build and lead the communications team

    • Manage the Communications & Content Manager, providing editorial direction, coaching, and prioritization.
    • Establish the communications operating model: workflows, editorial planning system, brand standards, and cross-functional feedback loops.
    • Define and track the communications scorecard: 25 earned placements and 100 mentions annually; 30% year-over-year audience growth across the HE newsletter and LinkedIn; two research studies each yielding at least one feature placement.

    Job requirements

    About You

    • Senior communications leader: 10–12 years of experience in strategic communications, or PR, with demonstrated success building organizational reputation and growing audiences in complex, politically sensitive environments.
    • Media relationships: Established connections across national, higher education, and mission-aligned press; track record of securing high-quality placements.
    • Exceptional judgment: Deep instinct for when to engage — CDI’s credibility depends on nonpartisan restraint as much as visibility. Proven track record protecting organizational reputation in politically sensitive environments while proactively shaping a positive organizational narrative, with the ability to clearly articulate trade-offs and advise leadership on risk.
    • Strong writer and editor: Track record producing or overseeing high-quality long-form thought leadership and executive communications.
    • Hands-on operator: Comfortable executing with speed, rigor, and attention to detail while building for scale; in a small organization, VP-level execution and follow-through are as important as vision.
    • Builder mindset: Experience establishing or significantly evolving a communications function, including processes, standards, and team structure; experience managing people in a startup or scaling organization.
    • Cross-functional collaborator: Proven ability to coordinate editorial and campaign work across research, marketing, and partnerships teams, and to align leadership before advancing work.
    • Mission-aligned: Deeply motivated by CDI’s mission, with the political awareness to communicate constructively and credibly across ideological lines. Familiarity with the higher education landscape strongly preferred.

Every new campus partnership extends CDI’s mission to more students, faculty, and leaders. The Partnerships Associate helps make that growth possible by identifying prospective higher education partners and generating qualified meetings that bring CDI’s work to more colleges and universities.

This is a learn-and-grow role for someone early in their career, energized by outreach and motivated by mission. Reporting to the SVP of Partnerships, you’ll partner with the Senior Manager of Demand Generation to turn marketing interest into active conversations, and with the wider Partnerships team to learn how to research, prioritize, and engage prospective institutions.

We see this as a launch pad. As you build your skills and track record, this role offers a clear path toward more senior business development and Partnerships positions, with growing ownership and scope over time.

    Responsibilities

    Outreach & Prospecting

    • Execute personalized outbound outreach (email, phone, LinkedIn, and other channels) to prospective partner institutions, using approaches you develop together with your manager and the Partnerships team.
    • Own timely, personalized follow-up on inbound and marketing-generated leads, converting interest into qualified meetings and early-stage partnership conversations
    • Conduct thoughtful research on prospective institutions to understand their priorities, challenges, and likely decision-makers before initiating outreach

    Pipeline & Process Management

    • Work closely with the Senior Manager of Demand Generation and Partnerships leads to learn and apply account prioritization, territory planning, and targeted outreach strategies.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all outreach activity, engagement history, and pipeline progression in Hubspot, helping ensure strong visibility across the team
    • Contribute ideas to strengthen lead follow-up and outreach workflows as you learn the motion.

    Performance & Insights

    • Meet activity and qualified-meeting goals with the coaching and support of your manager and the team.
    • Track outreach results and share what you are learning, including recurring patterns and common objections, with your manager and the Partnerships team.
    • Actively build the skills, habits, and higher education knowledge that set you up for a growing role on the Partnerships team.

    Job requirements

    About You

    • Early in your career and eager to grow. You are a recent graduate or have up to roughly two years of professional experience. Internships, co-ops, campus jobs, fellowships, and other outreach-driven experience all count.
    • Genuine excitement for outreach and relationship-building, with a willingness to research, personalize, and follow up persistently to start real conversations.
    • Organized and dependable, able to manage a high volume of outreach without letting things fall through the cracks.
    • A clear, professional communicator in writing and conversation, comfortable engaging a range of people, including senior leaders.
    • Resilient and coachable. You are energized rather than discouraged by rejection and targets, and you actively seek out and apply feedback.
    • Self-motivated and goal-oriented, comfortable with metrics and energized (not intimidated) by targets.
    • Genuinely curious about higher education and motivated by CDI’s mission to build skills for constructive dialogue on college campuses.
    • A growth mindset, with eagerness to learn the nuances of business development, sales, and the higher education market.
    • Exposure to CRM or sales engagement tools (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce) is a plus; we will train you on the rest.

    Benefits

    • Compensation — $65,000-$75,000, based on experience.
    • A Mission-Driven Culture — we practice what we preach, so our work culture is characterized by intellectual humility, continuous improvement, and open-mindedness
    • Remote-First — CDI was founded as a remote-first organization, and we work hard to maintain a strong team culture across vast distances
