  • Media & Storytelling Officer

    Great Southern Reef Foundation

    • Part-time (0.4 FTE | 15 hrs per week)
    • Remote work from home, anywhere within Australia
    • 6-month initial contract with strong potential for ongoing and increased employment as the Foundation grows.

HELP AUSTRALIA DISCOVER ITS GREAT SOUTHERN REEF

Stretching more than 8,000 kilometres around southern Australia, the Great Southern Reef is one of the world’s most remarkable marine ecosystems. It supports thousands of unique species, millions of livelihoods and coastal communities, and billions of dollars in economic activity, yet most Australians have never heard of it.

The Great Southern Reef Foundation exists to change that.

We’re working to build a national movement that connects Australians with the Great Southern Reef through science, storytelling, education and community engagement. By translating marine science into compelling public narratives, supporting collaboration across research and conservation, and engaging communities, partners and decision-makers, we help build the awareness, partnerships and momentum needed to secure a thriving future for Australia’s temperate reefs.

As our organisation continues to grow, we’re looking for someone who can help uncover and share the stories that will shape this movement.

    ABOUT THE ROLE

The Media & Storytelling Officer is responsible for identifying, developing and sharing the stories that define the Great Southern Reef.

Working closely with researchers, the Creative Director and project partners, you’ll uncover compelling narratives emerging from science, expeditions, communities and policy, then craft these into high-quality editorial content, media opportunities, strategic communications and funding narratives.

Your work will help translate complex science into stories that engage the public, strengthen partnerships, support fundraising and influence national conversations about Australia’s Great Southern Reef.

    WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for someone who sits at the intersection of marine science, storytelling and journalism.

Someone with enough scientific understanding to recognise what matters, enough editorial instinct to uncover the human story behind the science, and enough communications experience to ensure those stories reach the audiences that can make a difference.

You don’t wait for stories to arrive in your inbox – you go looking for them.

You enjoy talking with researchers, asking thoughtful questions, uncovering unexpected angles and translating complex ideas into stories that people genuinely want to read, watch and share.

Whether you’re developing a feature article, pitching a journalist, interviewing a scientist, writing a funding narrative or helping shape a national media story, you’re motivated by one simple question:

“What’s the story that will make people care?”

If you’re naturally curious, love learning, and believe powerful storytelling can help drive positive environmental change, we’d love to hear from you.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Story discovery and development

    • Identify compelling stories emerging from research, expeditions, community initiatives, partnerships and policy developments that advance the Great Southern Reef narrative.
    • Work proactively with researchers, project partners and the Great Southern Reef Research Partnership (GSRRP) to identify storytelling opportunities throughout the research process, including before publications are released.
    • Interview researchers, community members and partners to uncover engaging stories and human perspectives behind the science.
    • Research, write and edit high-quality articles, features, case studies and other editorial content for the Great Southern Reef Foundation website, publications and partner communications.
    • Develop compelling storytelling that supports funding proposals, partnership materials, reports and other strategic communications.

    MEDIA ENGAGEMENT

    • Work closely with the Creative Director and GSRRP to identify priority stories, shape editorial angles and develop media opportunities.
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, producers and media organisations across print, digital, broadcast and specialist media.
    • Develop tailored media pitches, media releases, media briefs and supporting materials.
    • Secure earned media coverage across print, digital, radio, television, podcasts and other relevant outlets.
    • Coordinate interviews, media appearances and commentary opportunities for researchers, spokespeople and project partners.
    • Act as the primary media contact for the Great Southern Reef Foundation, responding to media enquiries and coordinating spokesperson logistics.
    • Prepare media kits, background briefings, key messages and talking points to support interviews and media engagement.

SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE LOOKS LIKE

    • Increased earned media coverage featuring the Great Southern Reef.
    • Strong, long-term relationships with science, environment and regional journalists.
    • High-quality editorial content that effectively translates Great Southern Reef science and stories for diverse audiences.
    • Earlier identification and promotion of storytelling opportunities around new research, expeditions, partnerships and major initiatives.
    • Increased interview and profile opportunities for researchers, project partners and community voices.
    • Compelling storytelling that strengthens partnerships, supports funding opportunities and showcases the Foundation’s impact.
    • Increased public awareness, understanding and appreciation of the Great Southern Reef.

    ABOUT YOU

You’ll bring many of the following:

    • Exceptional storytelling, writing and editorial skills, with the ability to identify compelling narratives and translate complex scientific information into engaging stories.
    • Experience in science communication, journalism, media, communications or public relations, ideally within marine, environmental, conservation or research organisations.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and pitch stories that secure earned media coverage.
    • A strong understanding of marine science, conservation or environmental research. Knowledge of Australia’s temperate marine ecosystems is highly desirable.
    • Existing relationships with journalists across science, environment and regional media are highly regarded.
    • Excellent relationship-building skills and confidence working alongside researchers, Traditional Owners, community organisations and project partners.

    • Natural curiosity, strong editorial judgement and an instinct for recognising stories that will engage audiences and inspire action.

    WHY JOIN US

This is a rare opportunity to help shape how Australia understands one of its greatest natural assets.

  • Head of the EA Infrastructure Fund

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage you to apply sooner rather than later!

We’re hiring a Head for the EA Infrastructure Fund (EAIF). This is an opportunity to shape millions of dollars in grantmaking toward the organizations, research, and community-building efforts that strengthen effective altruism’s foundations, while also overseeing an updated version of CEA’s Community Building Grants (CBG) program. Few roles offer this much leverage over the trajectory of EA. Your work and decisions will directly shape what exists in the ecosystem and what doesn’t, from the organizations that get built to the research that gets funded.

You’ll have significant autonomy to define the fund’s strategic direction, grow its donor base, and build EAIF into an even more compelling vehicle for impact. This is a senior position on our EA Funds team, reporting to the Director of EA Funds.

    About CEA

The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) stewards the movement of people putting effective altruism principles into practice to solve the world’s most pressing problems. We’re working to build a flourishing future by applying evidence, reason, and compassion to challenges like global poverty, animal suffering, and existential risks.

Our work centers on growing and supporting a global community of people who rigorously analyze where they can do the most good – and take action on those insights. Current strategic priorities include increasing understanding of effective altruism and its principles, growing the number of people who are motivated by EA principles to take significant action to address pressing problems, and diversifying funding sources for high-impact work.

We had significant success in 2025, building momentum within CEA. Our headcount grew from 42 to 66 core staff. Program participation (e.g., events, courses, groups) grew by 20-25% year over year. We merged with EA Funds and are rapidly scaling up our capacity for grantmaking and associated fundraising.

In 2026, we’re maintaining ambitious momentum while building the foundations for a step-change in the wider EA ecosystem’s growth trajectory from 2027 onwards.

    About EA Funds and EAIF

EAIF is part of Effective Altruism Funds (EA Funds), which is the grantmaking arm of CEA. EA Funds directs financial resources to particularly cost-effective and impactful projects across four funds: the EA Infrastructure Fund, the Long-Term Future Fund, the Animal Welfare Fund, and the Global Health and Development Fund.

It’s a particularly exciting time to join EA Funds. The team’s recent integration with CEA allows it to benefit from shared infrastructure and opens up significant opportunities for programmatic synergies. We’ve also seen the Animal Welfare Fund scale from ~$3M to $10M in a single year under full-time leadership, with tens of millions more expected, and we believe significant growth is also possible for EAIF with the right person at the helm.

The EA Infrastructure Fund occupies an important position in the EA funding landscape. It is one of the very few funders dedicated to EA “meta” efforts: the work that multiplies the impact of direct work on the world’s most pressing problems. Its scope spans the organizations, research, and initiatives that support the EA ecosystem as a whole: funding EA groups around the world, supporting efforts to communicate EA ideas to new audiences, backing research on cause prioritization, seeding effective giving platforms that move donations to high-impact charities, and more. While EAIF is not quite alone in supporting that ecosystem, the landscape for meta-EA funding remains far thinner than for cause-specific work — and there are important areas, such as communication about EA principles, cause prioritization research, or smaller or early-stage projects, that would likely not get supported without EAIF. You will shape and lead the strategy of this fund, and in doing so, play a significant role in whether the EA ecosystem lives up to its potential.

    About the role

You will be responsible for high-quality grantmaking, strategic leadership of the fund, and fundraising. You will make grants yourself – including actively sourcing high-impact opportunities – while working to grow the fund’s capacity over time.

With EAIF’s integration into CEA and this new leadership hire, we’re looking to bring fresh strategic energy to the fund. As the fund’s leader, you’ll have significant latitude to define what EAIF should focus on and how it can add the most value. The right candidate will be guided by EA principles, think rigorously about where EAIF’s marginal dollar does the most good, and be willing to update that thinking over time.

We are genuinely open to your perspective on questions like:

    • How should EAIF position itself relative to other funders supporting the EA ecosystem?
    • What types of grants and grantees should EAIF prioritize to best support the community’s potential to do good?
    • How do we make EAIF a compelling product for donors, whether they’re already excited about supporting EA infrastructure or just starting to see its value?

    Community Building Grants

In addition to leading EAIF, you will also lead an updated version of CEA’s Community Building Grants (CBG) program, primarily focused on its grantmaking role. This program will continue to provide funding to professionalized local and national EA communities around the world. It is a distinct program with its own funding sources and grantmaking process, but its mission is closely aligned with EAIF’s scope. We see the combination of these responsibilities as a natural fit and an opportunity to take a more integrated view of how funding supports the EA community ecosystem.

Contributing to EA Funds’ broader strategy

As a senior member of the EA Funds team, you’ll also contribute to the overall strategic direction of EA Funds more broadly — sharing insights from EAIF’s work, collaborating with other fund leads, and helping strengthen the platform as a whole.

These goals will be supported by other teams at CEA. CEA’s Marketing and Communications team will partner with EA Funds to highlight the work of grantees, and we plan to hire fundraising staff to facilitate donations to EA Funds.

    Key responsibilities

    Grantmaking

    • Investigate and evaluate grant opportunities rigorously, assessing theories of change, team strength, expected impact, and other relevant factors
    • Actively source high-quality applications and grantmaking opportunities, including, where appropriate, encouraging promising individuals to pursue projects EAIF could fund
    • Communicate your grantmaking reasoning transparently through grant reports, feedback to applicants, and public writing
    • Contribute to improvements in the grantmaking processes of EA Funds

    Strategic leadership

    • Develop a compelling strategy for EAIF’s focus areas, grant types, and role in the funding ecosystem
    • Oversee an updated version of CEA’s Community Building Grants program, ensuring it effectively funds strong EA community builders worldwide
    • Represent EAIF and the Community Building Grants program (and occasionally EA Funds as a whole) within the EA community and to external stakeholders
    • Contribute to EA Funds’ broader strategic direction as a senior team member

    Fundraising

    • Grow EAIF’s donor base in collaboration with other CEA teams (e.g. EA Funds leadership, incoming fundraising staff, and the Marketing and Communications team)
    • Build and cultivate relationships with potential donors
    • Communicate EAIF’s impact and strategy in ways that are honest and compelling

    Ecosystem development

    • Develop strategic partnerships with other aligned funders and organizations
    • Collaborate with grantees and groups of grantees to help them succeed and maximize their impact
    • Contribute to the broader EA community’s thinking on funding priorities and strategic questions

    Team building

    • Hire and manage additional staff to support grantmaking efforts as the fund grows

    What we’re looking for

At a minimum, we want a candidate who has:

    • Genuine commitment to EA principles: commitment to careful reasoning about impact, willingness to change your mind based on strong reasoning and evidence, and concern for doing the most good. We’re looking for someone who leads with principles rather than fixed conclusions about which interventions or focus areas matter most.
    • Familiarity with the EA community: understanding of its key organizations, debates, and dynamics, and well-reasoned views on how to best support it.
    • An entrepreneurial mindset: the drive to shape a fund’s strategic direction, build something ambitious, and adapt as the landscape evolves.
    • Strong social and communication skills: the ability to professionally represent EAIF, EA Funds, and CEA, build networks, and navigate a wide range of conversations with grantees, donors, and community members.

In addition, it will be valuable if you have:

    • Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities
    • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex reasoning clearly and build trust with diverse stakeholders
    • Strong people and project management skills
    • Experience in grantmaking, philanthropic leadership, or related fields
    • A track record of building and scaling products or programs
    • Experience managing multi-million dollar budgets
    • A track record of leading fundraising efforts

We recognize we may be unlikely to find someone who fits all of these criteria, and we encourage you to apply even if you aren’t sure you’re fully qualified.

    Other information

    • This is a full-time, remote position. We prefer applicants who are able to work in time zones between US Pacific Time and CET.
      • We have an office in Oxford, UK, that you would have access to.

    • Reports to: Loic Watine, Director of EA Funds
    • Compensation
      • US: total compensation package of $157,435, comprising a base salary of $143,123 and a 10% unconditional 401k contribution.
      • UK: total compensation package of £94,711, comprising a base salary of £86,101 and a 10% pension contribution.
      • Other locations: For candidates outside the US and UK, we base compensation on our UK salary structure and adjust for the cost of employment and fixed local benefit costs to create an equivalent package.
      • Benefits in the US/UK include private health insurance, flexible work hours, a $6,000 / £5,000 annual professional development allowance, a $6,000 / £5,000 mental health support allowance, extended parental leave, ergonomic equipment, 25 days of paid vacation, and more.
    • This role will involve travel. There are likely 4-6 trips annually to attend team retreats and other events, including several international trips.

We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. • Director of Community Growth

Please note that we may review applications for this role on a rolling basis and we encourage you to apply early.

We’re hiring a Director of Community Growth (or, for exceptionally qualified candidates, a Chief Community Growth Officer) to lead talent growth for the whole EA ecosystem by scaling four of CEA’s flagship programs (Events, Groups, Online, and Courses) into their next era. This is one of the most important roles for EA’s future in the coming years – shaping the EA community and building the next generation of high-impact talent. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll join CEA’s senior leadership team and collaborate with teams across the organisation to help shape the future of CEA. We are open to hiring at the Director or Chief level.

    About CEA

The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) stewards the movement of people putting effective altruism principles into practice to solve the world’s most pressing problems. We’re working to build a flourishing future by applying evidence, reason, and compassion to challenges like global poverty, animal suffering, and risks from transformative AI.

We’re in the midst of the best fundraising year in CEA’s history (currently on track to raise $100M+) and are looking for the right talent to help us take advantage of the many opportunities in front of us.

    About the role

We’re hiring a senior leader to own and grow one of CEA’s highest-leverage engines for growth: Events, Groups, Online, and Courses, which will soon be united as one Community Growth Team.

This role represents an opportunity to be a transformative leader at an inflection point for both CEA and the wider EA ecosystem:

    • For CEA: We’re in the midst of our best fundraising year ever, building off a year of accelerating growth. We reversed a slightly negative growth trend into 20–25% year-over-year growth across our programs in this portfolio in 2025, and we’re now scaling from that momentum. Our headcount has approximately doubled over the past two years, and we’re looking to grow even faster. We’re merging our historical programs into one united Community Growth Team to enable faster and better coordination. You’ll have the opportunity to be a builder leading the way on our updated community growth strategy and team.
    • For the EA community: There’s a new wave of philanthropy leading to a wide variety of new impactful opportunities across the EA community. These opportunities are increasingly bottlenecked by having enough highly talented people to take them on. Ecosystem-wide data has shown CEA to be one of the organizations most credited with moving people into high-impact roles. You’ll have the opportunity to build on our existing success to enable the ecosystem to take advantage of a transformative opportunity.

    About the team

The Events, Groups, Online, and Courses teams are the core of CEA’s historical work. Together, they carry our talent growth pillar and the pipeline through which people move from early interest in effective altruism into deeper engagement and high-impact work.

    • The Events Team organizes EA Global, our flagship conference series: three conferences a year across San Francisco, London, and New York, drawing more than 3,000 attendees. It also runs the community-organised EAGx conferences and EA Summits (10 EAGx events and at least 23 Summits across more than 26 countries in 2026).
    • The Groups Team empowers and stewards the global network of EA groups, equipping community builders with the direct support, infrastructure, grants, and mentorship they need to help their groups flourish. Over a period of many years, these groups have been repeatedly cited as one of the most cited pathways into high-impact work: when Coefficient Giving (formerly Open Philanthropy) surveyed 217 people likely to have high-impact careers, respondents cited EA groups as an important factor more often than books, podcasts, or conferences, and in Rethink Priorities’ 2024 EA Survey, almost a third of community members named an EA group as important to getting involved.
    • The Online Team builds CEA’s digital products: the EA Forum, the EA Newsletter, and the Opportunities Board. These reach people at scale, with around 700,000 annual visitors to the Forum and more than 63,000 newsletter subscribers, and are among CEA’s highest-leverage channels for moving people toward more impactful work.
    • The Courses Team designs and delivers online programs that help talented people explore how they can best help others, offering structured guidance and support to take tailored next steps toward high-impact opportunities, from theIntroductory Program and the In-Depth Program to the Career Bootcamp, a free online program that helps accomplished professionals identify high-impact opportunities and take concrete steps toward a career transition. The Bootcamp’s most recent launch drew 1,818 applications. This number is well above the 100 to 500 typical of comparable programs. Program graduates have gone on to work in organisations including Secure Bio, the Centre for the Governance of AI, Coefficient Giving, New Roots Institute, the Centre for Effective Altruism, and Probably Good, with some founding their own nonprofits.

In addition to these existing programs, we expect you and your teams will eventually create new programs to fill strategic gaps. This is a role with opportunities to innovate and build.

    Key responsibilities

    In this role, you will:

    • Build and develop a team of exceptional leaders. Day-to-day, that means you’ll be hiring, developing, and coaching the people who run Events, Groups, Online, and Courses. You’ll empower outstanding leaders, set priorities across the team, decide how to allocate resources and make trade-offs, and foster teamwork that makes a team stronger together than the sum of its parts.
    • Shape CEA’s direction. As part of the Leadership Team, you’ll help set organization-wide strategy, coordinate across functions, and help build the next era of CEA. You’ll also be responsible for cultivating a collaborative culture and proactively looking for how your teams can move CEA’s other core goals of funding growth and a strong EA brand.
    • Own the strategy for talent growth. Work with product owners on your teams and leaders across the organization to define CEA’s overall talent growth goals, decide where to invest, and make the calls about what to grow, change, or stop.
    • Drive results via a product mindset. You’ll be responsible for leading a team to accelerate the growth of the EA community. We’ll expect you to have strong instincts for both product (e.g. what potential users want to engage with) and impact (we frequently discuss the concept of “product-market-impact fit”).

    What we’re looking for

You might be a great fit for this role if you have:

    • Strong value alignment and high context with effective altruism principles and CEA’s mission, including comfort with tradeoffs and a commitment to acting with integrity in a high-trust ecosystem. You should have enough familiarity with the EA community to be able to drive strategic insights and understand the ecosystem-wide implications of your decisions.
    • A strong track record of senior leadership in a complex organization, including setting direction, making high-quality decisions under uncertainty, and reliably translating strategy into execution.
    • An established track record of building and leading high-performing teams, including hiring and developing managers, creating clear ownership and accountability, setting high standards and expectations, and driving the feedback and performance management process to address performance issues when needed. People should join CEA because they are excited to work with you.
    • A product-development mindset. You understand what makes products and programs compelling, and have experience designing experiments with clear success criteria and making hard decisions based on both qualitative and quantitative data.
    • An entrepreneurial drive. You’re comfortable with ambiguity and decisions under uncertainty, and you create structure and new offerings in a fast-moving, rapidly scaling environment. You self-identify as a builder, and are excited to grow yourself and your team beyond your current responsibilities.
    • Strategic vision. You can set the direction for a core part of CEA’s strategy, empower the team to implement and build upon the strategy, and motivate the organization to achieve shared goals.
    • Strong stakeholder skills. You can work with other functions at CEA, as well as collaborate with leaders at other EA organizations. We should be excited for you to be a face of CEA.

We’re open to many different backgrounds. We can imagine experience in product roles, programmatic leadership at other non-profits, senior generalist roles (like consulting), growth-oriented roles, or startup generalist roles being helpful in this role. But if your background looks different and the responsibilities and skills above resonate with you, we’d love to see an application.

While we want to hold open the possibility of hiring an exceptional candidate at our most senior level, we expect there are few candidates who meet all of these criteria. We expect a Director level candidate will have substantial experience in many of the core areas above but may also have some important areas for growth, whereas we expect a Chief level candidate to match all of the above skills and traits.

    Other information

    • This is a full-time, remote position. We prefer applicants who are able to work in time zones between US Pacific Time and CET.
      • We have an office in Oxford, UK, that you would have access to.
    • Start date: Ideally as soon as possible, but we have reasonable flexibility for top candidates and understand that it may take time to responsibly transition out of responsibilities at another organization.
    • Reports to: Zachary Robinson, CEO
    • Compensation
      • In the US or UK, total compensation will start at $264,000, comprising a base salary of $240,000 and a 10% unconditional pension contribution.
      • Other locations: For candidates outside the US and UK, we base compensation on the same total compensation package and adjust for the cost of employment and fixed local benefit costs to create an equivalent package
You should expect to attend CEA retreats, conferences, and other events, likely totalling 5+ trips per year, including several international trips.
