Job Description
Purpose of the role:
The Senior Analyst will undertake research, produce analysis and draft reports and shorter publications which examine and propose solutions to prevent or mitigate deadly conflict in Mexico, including consideration of security, political, legal, governance, human rights, gender and social issues. The Senior Analyst will also actively champion Crisis Group policy positions and recommendations regarding Mexico and represent the organisation at events and in local, national and international media. The successful candidate will be based in Mexico.
Specific responsibilities:

In consultation with relevant colleagues conducts extensive field research into prevailing issues in Mexico, including extensive consultations, convenings, workshops and interviews to catalyse dialogue and outline innovative strategies that have the potential to break the current inertia in formulating solutions to the violence in Mexico;

Provides high quality written analyses - in clear and concise fashion - of the risks and origins of deadly conflict in the country in the form of detailed reports and briefing papers for publication as well as shorter derivatives (such as podcasts and op-eds) while respecting agreed timelines;

As needed, engages with colleagues in the Latin America program and across the organisation on cross-country and cross-regional analysis of conflict dynamics;

Proposes realistic and pragmatic policy recommendations and initiatives for relevant actors including political, civil society and other stakeholders at the national as well as regional and international levels aimed at preventing, mitigating or resolving conflict;

Advocates Crisis Group policy positions and recommendations regarding conflict and represents Crisis Group at events and in local, national and international media;

Provides support to the Program Director and Deputy Director for Crisis Group activities and advocacy in the region and globally;

Independently and timely completes administrative duties, including tracking of activities, expense management, etc;

As required, supervise consultants and stringers.
Requirements:

Post-graduate qualification in international relations, political science, social sciences or other relevant field of academic study;

At least seven years of professional experience in the field of conflict research, analysis and prevention, working in government, academia, international organisations, non-governmental organisations or the media;

Demonstrated excellent writing skills in English and Spanish;

Strong research and analytical skills, and proven experience of formulating persuasive policy recommendations;

Extensive knowledge of Mexico’s security and public policy issues, and experience of living and working in the region;

Willingness to do field research throughout Mexico;

A network of governmental and non-governmental, official, media and civil society contacts in the region;

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation skills;

Experience of working successfully within a team as well as the ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
