Job Description
Title: Manager, Programs
Reports to: Katie Tobin, Senior Manager, Programs
Location: Remote (Global) and/or Hybrid (WEDO’s office is in Brooklyn, NY, USA)
Organizational Overview
The Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) is a women’s global advocacy organization based in New York. Officially founded in 1991 in the run-up to the Earth Summit (UNCED, 1992), WEDO, a champion for women’s rights, has built a reputation as a trailblazer in promoting human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment, notably in sustainable development.
Position Summary
This Manager position is a full-time staff member, responsible for WEDO’s data programs (the Gender and Environment Data Alliance and the Gender Climate Tracker), and contributing to our monitoring, evaluation, and learning work more broadly. Combining familiarity with the intersecting issues of gender equality and environment and a deep affinity for managing people and programs, the Program Manager will lead the development and execution of a strategic vision for data-driven programming at WEDO. This role requires a passion for process and coordination, with a focus on building and maintaining structured systems to ensure seamless program management. Responsibilities include managing the full program lifecycle—vision and strategy, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation—for GEDA (45%) and GCT (25%). The ideal candidate thrives on creating order, aligning stakeholders, and advancing WEDO’s mission at the intersections of gender, environment, and data through meticulous planning and collaboration.
Key responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:
- Serve as point person for GEDA’s Advocacy and Outreach Working Group and external engagement, including managing communications consultant(s);
- Execute GEDA small grants (with support from the Associate for Programs and Policy);
- Represent WEDO on GEDA’s Co-Convener team (monthly meetings and coordination) and Steering Committee (bimonthly meetings and coordination), alongside Associate for Programs and Policy;
- Undertake an audit and handover with current WEDO staff on the implementation of the GCT, determining key needs for maintaining ongoing work and to develop a forward-thinking vision for the tool;
- Oversee standard updates across the functionality of the GCT, including outlining and managing the staffing (full-time, consultants, and/or interns) and resource support required;
- Lead grant management and reporting across both programs;
- Support fundraising efforts directly related to these initiatives in addition to supporting fundraising efforts overall
In addition to these responsibilities, around 30% of the role will relate to organizational support and management including:
- Management and support of WEDO staff, with one to two full time staff as direct reports, in addition to consultants and/or interns as relevant;
- Providing support and leadership to WEDO organizational work, including key roles on internal committees around fundraising and WEDO’s approach to monitoring, learning and evaluation.
Desired Experience
- At least seven years of combined education and professional experience, with a strong background in gender, environment/climate, data, and/or monitoring and evaluation, approached through a feminist and/or global justice perspective.
- Demonstrated affinity for and, ideally, training in equitable and supportive management, with at least three years’ experience managing staff;
- Significant experience and enthusiasm for collaborative working, with experience coordinating large teams and/or coalitions with multiple partners;
- Demonstrated ability to perform data analysis and draft written analyses of highlights and trends for different target audiences;
- At least some experience fundraising, owning grant management/reporting, and ideally administrating small grants;
- Demonstrated commitment to WEDO’s vision, willingness and enthusiasm to contribute to its organizational growth, and deep alignment with its feminist values.
Relevant Skills
Essential
- Strength in project management with sharp attention to detail and demonstrated knowledge of relevant tools and/or systems, including ideally monitoring, evaluation, and learning;
- Strong coordination skills and commitment to accountability through collective working methods and team collaboration;
- Familiarity with international settings and remote work, high level of comfort with online platforms (Zoom, Slack, time zone converter, Doodle, etc);
- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills;
Ideal
- Working proficiency in French and/or Spanish;
- Experience with software project management tools and processes;
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Tableau;
- Experience with curation and updating of resource libraries.
Core Competencies
- Inclusive leadership: You approach leadership with a mindset of “power with” rather than “power over.” You recognize the value of divergent perspectives and regularly include others in planning and decision-making. You build equity and inclusion into goals and plans for staff development, retention, strategy, and culture. As the lead on our data programs and our MEL work, you will sometimes make difficult decisions in the best interest of the organization. When needed, you’re able to weigh complex factors and communicate tough decisions with clarity and empathy.
- Ownership and resilience: You gather information, seek input, and drive work forward to the finish line. You think 3 (or 30) steps ahead to develop solutions, anticipate problems, and course-correct when needed. You hold a high bar even when things are hectic and bounce back from setbacks by turning each hurdle into a learning opportunity.
- High volume, high efficiency: You maintain systems for keeping tasks from slipping through the cracks. You’re able to juggle competing demands and prioritize without sacrificing quality. You get back to people in a timely manner and take pride in providing clear, helpful information.
- Attention to detail: As the owner of our data programs, you notice and fix errors that others might overlook. When mistakes happen (which they will!), you address them quickly and look for ways to prevent similar errors.
- Coaching and modeling: You make it your mission to develop others. You delegate skillfully and take the time to offer useful and actionable feedback. Because you lead by example (with our values as your north star), you inspire and motivate others to take action and meet goals. You hold the team accountable in ways that grow the people and our impact, and you make sure people feel appreciated.
