The Afara Initiative is a non-profit organization which aims to set ~1Mn un/under-served post-secondary and university graduates on a path to economic independence and support them as emerging entrepreneurs, industry and public leaders of the new Nigeria. Our mission is to provide African youth with the mindset, skillsets, resources and global networks to thrive and become industry and nation builders and leaders.
Since 2014, The Afara Initiative has impacted 1,000+ students through its programs and aims to scale to 55,000+ students by 2029 and 1M+ by 2034. In 2025 itself, we have an ambitious goal of impacting 8,000 students through our programs.
Our students span across all 36 states in Nigeria and our alumni work across 10+ countries across the globe. We have scaled our impact through two major interventions: The Bridge Fellowship (A hyper-selective leadership accelerator for high potential university students with a dedication towards creating systemic change) and The Pathway Career Accelerator (Career accelerators run in partnership with universities offering career development and advancement programs and services).
Position Summary
The main purpose of the role is to manage all aspects of Afara’s partnerships portfolio, ensuring sufficient volume and value in the pipeline of prospects – both university and corporates, including the efficient and effective working with key stakeholders within the network. Working in close consultation with the Founder and CEO, the role holder will manage all B2B partnerships from concept to delivery with the overall objective of: reaching relevant and high-calibre prospects; positively engaging and converting these into partnership agreements; providing them with a world-class client and account management experience; maintaining positive ongoing relations with them as key stakeholders and tracking and reporting on outcomes and impacts that meet the expectations of Afara and relevant partners in the portfolio. Areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy, including defining short and long-term goals and objectives related to the Afara Initiative.
- Draft regular blog posts, emails, newsletters, and other communication materials in conjunction with the Marketing Team and Strategy Office. Collaborate on speechwriting and internal communications with colleagues to draft meaningful messages that resonate with target audiences.
- Develop and manage a communications budget, implementing strategic communications campaigns and communications plans for key events.
- Support the production of monthly Town Halls and other all-student and all-staff events and
communications. This includes scheduling, coordinating with partners and teams, and drafting briefs and talking points for leadership.
- Draft messaging on behalf of the Leadership Team, research and draft briefing materials and memos for meetings and convenings with relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure cross-collaboration between communications and other departments and ensure that adequate support from communications is provided for priority projects and campaigns.
- Research events, programs, issue areas, leaders, and more to inform speeches, social media posts, etc. Review drafts for factual accuracy and consistent messaging. Research and conduct due diligence on external events and invitations to inform senior leadership participation and engagement.
- Serve as press contact and draft press materials, including media advisories, press releases, talking points, letters to the editor, and other communications priorities and conduct regular media monitoring.
- Develop, update, and manage inventory of internal and external communications tools and platforms across organization.
- Develop digital content strategies and monitor social media content while managing visual brand identity and usage guidelines.
- Coach and train the team for externally facing staff on public speaking, writing, and social media. Personal Attributes and Skills
- An entrepreneurial and growth mindset with a commitment to delivering Afara’s mission ● Seasoned communications generalist with experience developing and leading strategic communications
- Skilled communicator and people manager who can plan and execute effectively along with project management experience
- Experience in communication strategy and planning for issues that potentially attract media attention
- Experience in communicating with socio-economically and racially diverse audiences and deep and demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree level or higher, with a strong analytical, business focus, and a proven record of academic excellence along with significant knowledge of the African education sector
- At least 3-7 years of previous experience in Communications, Marketing, or Media in a high growth environment, Foundations, or preferably in the Ed-tech sector
- Passion for youth development, education, training and development in Africa
