About Us

Organisational Overview

Global Girl Project (GGP) is an international and grassroots feminist charity that mobilises marginalised girls within the Majority World to become agents of social change, through community development and social action. GGP was founded 10 years ago in the US as a registered 501(c)3 non profit and then became registered in the UK as aCharitable Incorporated Organisation in 2019. GGP works globally, within the Global Majority, in partnership with well-established organisations to run innovative and impactful leadership programming for girls aged 13 to 18 years. Global Girl Project works intentionally from an anti-colonial and non-patriarchal framework and is growing a team of professionals from within the regions we work that also work from and value above most else, this way of working.

In addition, as identified by our recent Board Skills Audit we are looking for an individual with one or more of the following areas of expertise

  • Previous Board experience, with a solid understanding of duties and best practices in governance and compliance
  • Experience as a Board chair, vice-chair or co-chair, with a willingness to step into this role for GGP once fully onboarded
  • Connected into an international feminist network of changemakers, philanthropists, activists and influential people of all genders

Role Overview

Global Girl Project is seeking a Chair of the Board with significant governance experience and a passion for feminist leadership. This is a pivotal moment in our journey as we expand our impact and strengthen our sustainability as a global grassroots charity.

As Chair, you will play a central role in shaping strategy, guiding the Board, and acting as a trusted partner to our CEO. You will help ensure that GGP has the leadership, resources, and networks needed to grow our impact and reach more girls globally.

We are looking for someone who brings strong governance and leadership skills, an inclusive and collaborative approach, and connections into feminist leadership and funding spaces. Most importantly, you will share our commitment to doing things differently: leading from feminist values, challenging traditional power structures, and championing creative new ways to resource our mission and amplify girls’ leadership worldwide.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

Governance & Leadership

  • Work with the CEO to set board agendas, chair effective meetings, and ensure timely follow-up on decisions.
  • Provide support, accountability, and a sounding board to the CEO through bi-weekly check-ins.
  • Lead on board development, including recruitment, onboarding, and trustee engagement and follow up
  • Ensure GGP meets its legal and regulatory obligations, drawing on knowledge of Charity Commission compliance.
  • Ensure you are familiar with the GGP Constitution, strategy and Charity Commission status
  • Be familiar with the organisation budget and actively engage in financial risk management as part of board meetings.
  • Ensure GGP meets our targets and objectives (as set out in our strategic plan) and is operating at its maximum potential
  • Ensure you keep up-to-date on the business of GGP via the CEO’s reports and other information shared
  • Identify any issues within the organisation including, but not limited to, financial management, risk management and compliance with the UK Charity Commission compliance

Strategy & Oversight

  • Facilitate active participation in strategic decision-making, ensuring GGP remains aligned to its mission and impact goals.
  • Participate in the annual strategy meeting (in-person strongly encouraged).

Fundraising & Advocacy

  • Meet the annual “Give or Get” commitment of £1,200 GBP / $1,450 USD, and lead by example in board giving.
  • Advocate for GGP externally by sharing stories, opening doors to potential partners, and championing our work.
  • Cultivate relationships with potential donors, ambassadors, and philanthropic partners, with particular focus on feminist leadership and funding spaces.
  • Share insights into the UK and/or global fundraising landscape to inform GGP’s strategy.

  • Understand GGP objectives and programming, build the confidence and understanding to advocate for GGP
  • Listening to and respecting the views of everyone involved in GGP, irrespective of hierarchy. At GGP thevoices of our girls, staff and volunteers are all valued for their range of perspectives and contributions.
  • We expect the above to mean a generous contribution of a minimum of 8 hours per month to your role as board memberand to advancing GGPs strategy, objectives and impact

This is a voluntary unremunerated role, and the commitment is to prepare for and attend 6 board meetings per year virtually. The appointment is for an initial three-year term, with the potential to extend for another three years.

Person Specification Essential

  • Board Leadership Experience: Previous board or senior governance experience, with a clear understanding oftrustee responsibilities, liabilities, and the role of a Chair.
  • Commitment to Shared Leadership: Willingness to step into a co-chair role once fully onboarded and agreed upon by the Board and CEO.
  • Mission Alignment: Deep passion for advancing opportunities for girls in Global Majority communities globally, with a perspective rooted in the strengths, leadership, and
    self-effcacy of those communities.
  • Strategic Influence: Confident communicator with the ability to build consensus, navigate diverse perspectives, and lead across international contexts.
  • Networks and Advocacy: Ability to leverage and build strong connections within feminist leadership andfunding communities, and to act as an ambassador for GGP.
  • Governance Values: Knowledge of safeguarding and risk oversight (or willingness to develop), and commitment to collaborative, transparent, and feminist approaches to board leadership.
  • Board Culture and Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to support, motivate and hold fellow trustees accountable in pursuit of shared goals.

Desirable

  • Fundraising Leadership: Demonstrated experience in supporting fundraising growth, whether through cultivating networks, stewarding donors, or strategic oversight of fundraising activity.
  • Cross-Sector Experience: Experience engaging with philanthropy, corporate partners, or institutional donorsto broaden funding opportunities.
  • NGO/Charity Familiarity: Working knowledge of charity governance, compliance and operations (e.g. UK Charity Commission or equivalent frameworks).
