Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is a youth-led, gender-balanced Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that advocates for environmental sustainability and community development. Founded in 2014, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and building the capacity of various stakeholders to adopt sustainable environmental practices that meet the needs of the present generation without compromising future generations’ quality of life.

Background

Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is a youth-led NGO committed to environmental sustainability, climate action, and community development. GAYO Uganda supports research, youth empowerment, circular economy initiatives, and disaster risk reduction programs across the country.

To strengthen operational efficiency and internal coordination, GAYO Uganda seeks to recruit a Communications support Assistant  who will support  the effective delivery of GAYO’’s communication strategy, ensuring timely documentation, storytelling, media engagement, and visibility of the organization.

Initial Strategic Priorities (First 12–18 Months)

  • Strengthen YCC Uganda’s digital presence and brand consistency across platforms.
  • Increase youth engagement and participation through strategic online campaigns.
  • Enhance media visibility and positioning of YCC Uganda as a credible youth climate platform.
  • Improve documentation, reporting, and storytelling of impact and policy influence.
  • Establish strong internal communication coordination across programs and regions.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Content Creation and Management

  • Draft and publish engaging content for GAYO’s social media platforms, including posts, stories, and campaigns.
  • Develop multimedia content (graphics, short videos, blogs) highlighting GAYO’s activities and achievements. 
  • Maintain a content calendar aligned with organizational priorities and climate events.

2. Media Relations 

  • Support the preparation of press releases, newsletters, and opinion articles.
  • Assist in organizing quarterly media engagements and interviews.
  • Maintain and update a media contact database.
  • Foster positive working relationships with journalists and media houses.

3. Internal and External Communications

  • Collaborate with Programs and M&E teams to collect project updates, impact stories, and visual documentation. 
  • Support stakeholder events, workshops, and campaigns by developing promotional and branding materials.
  • Assist in updating website content and digital communication channels.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor social media metrics and prepare monthly analytics reports on engagement and reach.
  • Collect stakeholder feedback to inform communication improvements.
  • Support documentation of lessons learned and best practices in communications.

Profile – Experience and Competencies

Required Experience

  • A recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in content creation, digital communications, or media engagement (internship or volunteer experience acceptable).
  • Experience using website content management systems (e.g., WordPress or Webflow) is an added advantage.

Technical and Domain Knowledge

  • Proficiency in digital tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and basic video editing software.
  • Strong understanding of social media trends and digital engagement strategies.
  • Familiarity with environmental sustainability and climate change concepts is an advantage.

Required Competencies

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills. 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism.

Working Relationships

Reports to: Communications Officer

Key Internal Relationships: Programs Team, M&E Officer, Regional Coordinators, Operations Team.

Key External Relationships: Media representatives, youth-led organizations, climate stakeholders, and partners within the national climate ecosystem.

Terms and Conditions

  • Contract Duration: 1 Year
  • Working Hours: 20 hours per week 
  • Working Language: English and Luganda/Kiswahili
  • Monthly Stipend: 400,000
