About me

Although men and women both face violence in their lives. The ratio of violence against women is much higher than men. Statistics show that women all over the globe face various forms of violence in different places however, the domestic sphere is the most common place where it occurs either by intimate partners or parents. Gender-based violence also has negative implications on the lives of individuals and their families. Throughout the struggle for women’s rights, it has been recognized that it is gender roles and relations’ differences in access to and control over resources, and the skewed power balance between men and women that lie at the root of discrimination and inequality. Being associated with Rozan, an Islamabad-based non-governmental organization that works on a gender-just society I am working on Promoting Gender Justice by Engaging Men and Boys to Reduce Gender-Based Violence. For the past four years, I am rigorously engaged in promoting the 5th and 10th SGD goals for 2030; gender equality and climate change. My interventions in these areas focused on engaging youth from communities and academia to build their capacities on the issues of masculinities and women empowerment and climate change. For this purpose, groups of young boys in Kuri Village (situated in the suburbs of Islamabad and street children engaged in Vision Pakistan Trust that has engaged these low-income families in  tailoring skills). Rozan extended support in developing the understanding and perspectives of these young men with a series of training sessions covering the themes that include self-growth, assertive behavior, interpersonal communication skills, gender, gender-based violence, CSA, Climate change, and masculinities. I am the lead facilitator and carry out these sessions.

Besides this, we engage Senior men and women along with faith leaders from the Kuri community. These marginalized groups are also trained on the challenges faced by vulnerable groups, masculinities, and climate change through awareness-raising sessions and capacity-building training. Moreover, I used sports as a tool in the same community and in VPT to spread the messages to curb gender-based violence which also resulted in the success to extend messages to wider communities. Although I have been working in communities for years now the need of taking the discourse forward with these boys and young men is still very high and I have an earnest desire to study in an advanced educational and professional setup to build on my capacity and knowledge.

Moreover, Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is the donor to my organization under the project of ‘Creating Equal Opportunity for Socio-Economic Empower of Marginalized Communities’ and I am affiliated with it since 2017. during our community intervention under the umbrella of this project it was found that faith leaders can be effective sources to spread the messages on curbing GBV. on behalf of Rozan I engaged two faith leaders in disseminating messages related to women’s empowerment, inheritance rights of girls, early child marriages, prevention of GBV, and benefits of the plantation.

Furthermore, in the following paragraph I would like to summarize the outcome of my experience that best highlights the two SGD goals of Gender parity and climate change. My part of the world is mostly dominated by men and cases found during research that men are actual perpetrators of violence in most of the cases. Therefore, with the help of my Rozan I was able to conduct a series of sessions and it is still in process, I have got a greater change in the attitudes of adult men and boys who had a very dogmatic approach towards women’s development. Now they have taken it at their face value that men and women are both equally capable of respect, and need equal opportunities in the affairs of life.

Interestingly, women empowerment programs are running side by side, where I have been facilitating university students on awareness of women’s rights. These women and university students started to speak for their rights and most of the students in the universities are running awareness-raising campaigns to empower more women in their reach.

In addition, with the pressing need for positive contributions to Climate change and Considering the intensity of the issue I added a session on climate change in my training module and I hold sessions with different segments in my community. As a result, People started plantations in their houses after attending the sessions. Most of the people approached organizations for support in providing plants. One of the religious leaders planted around 100 plants and also gave a sermon about the importance of plantation.
