Job Summary
RA is looking for a qualified Ugandan national to fill the position on program officer Forest & Landscape Restoration responsible for spearheading the design and implementation of impactful initiatives for RA and Partners aimed at advancing for forest and landscape restoration, regenerative investments, nature-based solutions and nature-based enterprise (NbE) development in targeted communities, landscapes and regenerative centres mainly in the districts of Buikwe, Luweero, Mukono, Wakiso among others. The officer will strengthen the Forestry and Water Resources pillar in alignment with other pillars. The job holder will support, oversee and maximize the potential of the forest and land use investments for Regenerate Africa and partners to ensure the effective delivery of the RA’s forest, agroforestry and regenerative investments, while fostering nature-based solutions. The officer will maintain close working collaboration with government institutions, private businesses, civil society actors, and local communities to build capacities and operationalize partnerships aimed at responsible management and restoration of degraded forests and lands.
It is a field based full-time position and he/she will be directly supervised by the Technical and Strategic Advisor, Regenerate Africa.
Roles and responsibilities
- Lead in designing, supervising and implementing normative activities in the planning and management of natural, planted forests and of planted tree resources aimed at the provision of a range of ecosystem services; collaborating closely with other units in RA and with partners organizations.
- Support the strengthening and visibility of nature-based solutions in the forest and land use, including supporting the bioeconomy, food systems and regenerative agriculture initiatives and investments.
- Provide technical support for achieving landscape restoration, NBS and nature-based enterprise (NbE) development and implementation with selected partners
- Provide technical steer on green finance issues, especially in relation to climate and nature finance, focusing on aspects such as the relationship between carbon and biodiversity markets, initiatives like biodiversity credits, and Nature for Nature, including initiatives such as Mobilizing Finance for Forests Nature Based Solutions (NbS) and nature-based enterprises (NbE)
- Support capacity building and generate, compile and disseminate technical information and training course materials and tools, maintain and regularly update databases and web-based information systems on forests, landscape restoration and regeneration, Nature Based Solutions (NbS) and nature-based enterprise (NbE) development.
- Provide strategic steer on complementarities and synergies between the Forest and Landscape restoration with other RA and in country sectors like Health, Climate, Gender, Regenerative Agriculture, identifying opportunities to maximize communication campaigns, engagement with key decision makers and lessons exchanges among beneficiaries, partners and other stakeholders.
- Working closely with political, climate, biodiversity & environmental policy, business & trade and communications colleagues, to maximise the impact of the Forest and Landscape regeneration and restoration with a clear narrative on nature-based solutions. This will include building relationships, and lobbying when required, with political, businesses and technical level contacts in government, sub-national authorities, representatives of businesses, academia and civil society, and leading some of these relationships.
- Implement advocacy and awareness raising activities through sensitization meetings at local level with key partners in line with the RA guidelines
- Support the CSOs, Cooperatives and other organized groups neighboring targeted protected areas to consolidate existing Nature Based Enterprises to scale for value additions and market linkages.
- Serve as the RA’s focal point for matters related to forests, agroforestry and regeneration including planning, organizing and participating in relevant national and international international meetings, seminars, and workshops as appropriate
- Build and maintain an excellent working relationship with RA partners (government institutions, civil society organisation and private sector) in order to collaboratively design and generate buy of conservation, management and integrated landscape restoration initiatives.
- Assist in identifying opportunities for RA Program and project development for in line with RA Strategy and relevant Uganda government commitments and sectorial policies and strategies pertaining sustainable development goals, forest ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, Nationally Determined Contributions, Adaptation Plans, land use planning, food security, renewable energy, green economy, among others
- Actively contribute to fundraising for initiatives for RA through the development of proposals to be submitted to donors
- Prepare and implement activity work plans and budgets in line with RA guidelines,
- Work as part RA team to coordinate trainings and capacity building for targeted groups in the project landscape.
- Provide technical support in strengthen and grow the institutional capacity, partner organisations and communities involved in forest landscape restoration including groups, associations and cooperatives.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced university degree in forestry, agroforestry, natural resource management or other field related to reforestation, afforestation and regeneration.
- Three years of relevant experience in forestry, agroforestry development, especially regeneration, restoration, establishment and management of sustainable forests or trees and landscapes.

Technical/Functional Skills
- Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
- Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge in sustainable forest management, including regeneration, reforestation and afforestation for ecosystem restoration and provision of multiple ecosystem services.
- Experience in capacity development in this area is desirable.
- Extent and relevance of experience with in integrating planted forests and tree resources in broader land use.
- Extent and relevance of experience in planning and managing field projects on sustainable forests, including private forests and in small holder or community forestry
- Ability to analyze complex natural and planted forests for restoration issues from a public and private sector point of view.
- Ability to mobilize resources.
Duty station: Field Based RA’s Regenerative sites in Buikwe District, Luweero, Mukono, Wakiso, among others and Regenerate Africa’s Kampala Office (Located in Lukuki, Makindye), based on a need and demands.
Duration for the position
The duration for the position is 2 years, and renewable based on demonstrated outstanding performance and availability of funding.
