Communications Intern
Location: Remote and/or in a chapter city (Boston, Chicago, Detroit/Ann Arbor, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St.Paul, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC)
Duration: September through December 2026
Part-time: 10 – 15 hours per week Stipend Included

Position overview:
826 National is seeking a bright and innovative Communications Intern. This position is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning how a national nonprofit utilizes communications and marketing deliverables, digital tools, and reporting metrics to support its mission and advocate for writing education and young writers across the country. The intern will be instrumental in expanding communications and development strategiesfor a wide range of audiences, from donors and board members to the media and general public. Responsibilities include maintaining a consistent social media presence; creating digital assets and graphics foruse in outreach materials and digital campaigns; managing the annual communications calendar; drafting written copy for digital campaigns; and reporting on performance metrics across email and social media platforms.
Projects and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Design and edit digital assets including social media graphics, reels, and media files for multipurpose communications and outreach use
- Design, draft, and format email campaigns, newsletters, organizational updates, and other writtencommunications in email CRM to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with 826 National’s brand voice.
- Develop compelling, audience-tailored social media copy for platforms such as Facebook,Instagram, and LinkedIn.
- Support the creation of media kits, digital toolkits, and other promotional assets for network-wide campaigns, announcements and fundraising initiatives.
- Maintain an up-to-date editorial calendar.
- Assist in capturing meeting agenda notes and documenting action items during communications team meetings.
- Engage with followers on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels to foster awelcoming, mission-aligned community presence.
- Assist in tracking social media channel performance through monthly and quarterly reports to provide insights for informing communications strategy.
Candidate must:
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills
- Possess a strong attention to detail, be technology savvy, and a passion for social media
- Be well organized with the ability to prioritize time sensitive projects
- Experience with Canva, or other design and editing tools
- Possess a genuine interest in the inner workings of a national nonprofit
- Feel a true passion for the 826 mission, desire to learn, and a willingness for good, hard work
- Have a personal laptop to use
- Be able to commit to 10-15 hours per week
Desired Qualifications (but not a requirement):
- Experience with proofreading
- Strong familiarity with a diverse range social media platforms and CRM tools including: Facebook, Instagram, MailChimp, WordPress, Google Analytics
- Asana experience
- Courses or experience in communications or marketing
- At least one year of experience in an entry-level or volunteer communications or operations role within a nonprofit, education, or youth-serving organization.
