Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the global organization’s presence in the United States. Job Summary
AIUSA’s Movement Building and Member Engagement Department (MBME) brings together grassroots members, activists, and leaders, and incorporates technology through distributed leadership to create lasting change. AIUSA works though grassroots development and leadership, partnership and coalition building, education and training, data analysis, and storytelling to build our movement for human rights domestically, connected to the international movement for human rights. Movement building is the key for sustainable change for the human rights movement, and AIUSA seeks leaders who can activate and collaborate with grassroots leaders who can play their part to create lasting change. Shared leadership is the process by which AIUSA volunteer leaders and staff together guide AIUSA. Our shared leadership guidelines encompass core principles, values, accountability, and communication, along with core principles that serve as the foundation to support AIUSA’s human rights work.
The Manager, Regional Mobilization (“Manager”) – West implements AIUSA’s grassroots mobilization, activism, and movement building strategy in a regional perspective across our 5 member types (local groups, student groups, task forces, member leaders, and digital activists) advancing a unified movement strategy aligned with AIUSA’s strategic priorities, and in support of an international human rights movement. The West region encompasses Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
The Manager trains and develops AIUSA’s activist leaders, partnering with them to build an organized member-led movement. The Manager serves as a key leader in Amnesty’s movement building efforts, cultivating and sustaining grassroots people power, by managing the day-to-day regional activism operations.
The Manager also works with other teams across AIUSA, with Amnesty’s 200,000 active members and over 1 million supporters, and external partners to advance human rights work in the United States.
This role is a union position and covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Communication Workers of America (CWA), Local 1180. This is a two-year fixed term role.
Essential Responsibilities
Regional Program Management
- Executes AIUSA’s strategy for grassroots activism, member mobilization, activist engagement, movement growth and sustainability for their assigned region and/or states
- Leads the daily operations of mobilization, movement building, and member engagement within their region
- Manages and executes a regional strategy for recruiting members and member leaders, integrating member leaders in national and state leadership teams – existing and new, and operating according to AIUSA’s ladder of engagement
- Tracks and reports on the progress and outcomes of the region’s goals, working with members to monitor local developments at the municipal and state level that have human rights impact
- Work with staff and member leaders to coordinate and execute on-the-ground tactics (like rallies, demonstrations and vigils) that will advance AIUSA’s campaign goals
- Lead process improvements for regional mobilization effectiveness; identify and implement best practices
- Allocate resources and prioritize initiatives within assigned region to achieve organizational goals and maximize impact
- Track data to assess impact of the campaign tactics and identify potential new supporters, members, leaders, partners
Member Leadership Development and Support
- Assess and deliver training needs, including human rights education training, with the goal of developing skills, supporting and advancing member development and leadership
- Develops and executes strategies to ensure member group sustainability that supports Amnesty’s human rights work value of shared leadership
- Collaborate with members, member leaders and staff in the development and execution of small- and large-scale events throughout the year to increase AIUSA’s supporter base and visibility
- Provide coaching and mentoring to volunteer leaders; identify development opportunities and support member career growth within AIUSA’s movement structure
Collaboration and External Partnerships
- Manages, and works collaboratively with department staff in planning and implementing work plans that will advance international, national, and state level human rights advocacy and activist engagement
- Represents Amnesty International USA to external partners and fosters collaboration and alliances, expanding the network of community partners for AIUSA with member leaders and staff
- Participates in shared responsibility and collaboration with the volunteer and internal and external constituents

Education and Experience
- BA/BS and at least 7 years relevant experience or MA/MS and 5 years relevant experience and/or sufficient relevant work experience
- Demonstrated experience working with members and/or volunteers, especially with models of distributive leadership and planning community events
- Preference for community and grassroots experience for one of the states within the southern region highly desired:
- West region: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming
- Candidates residing in one of the states above is strongly preferred but not required
- Experience working in a grassroots and/or member-based organization with shared leadership principles Experience managing complex and diverse relationships with grassroots activists, partners, and members of the broader human rights eco-system
- Experience preferred in one of the following areas of work:
- Community Organizing
- Volunteer management
- Digital Organizing
- Member-led Distributed Organizing
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer
Travel Requirements, Weeknight or Weekend Work
- Ability to travel required, e.g., staff retreats, member trainings/convenings, annual and regional AIUSA conferences
